I can second that. It is most definitely copy-pasted from Lang's website.

Indeed, it is from CREASE PATTERNS FOR FOLDERS. I should have known since I've read that post many times (but not to the point of learning it by heart). Also because "aficionado" seems to be one of his favorite words  .

As far as I'm aware, ORIPA can't bisect a straight angle (i.e., make a perpendicular at a given point along a crease with nowhere to drop it). This is similar to Axiom 4 except that the given point is on the crease in question.
Is there a way to do it in your app? It's possible to make an extra crease and just delete it later, but that seems like unnecessary work.

Indeed. I had never noticed that! Oripa quietly ignores any attempt to draw a perpendicular to a line from a point that belongs to the line. It behaves even more curiously if you try to bisect a flat angle. I am not sure what it does but it is certainly wrong.

Actually, I don't know how you could work around this limitation, short of using the angle/length tool or making some elaborate construction (e.g., a symmetrical segment followed by an angle bisector).

OrigamiDraw has no problem drawing a perpendicular to a line regardless of whether the point is external to the line or sits on it. Check it here. The new version I am preparing will even be easier to use.

It sounds like there’s a bit of a learning curve, but I look forward to trying it at some point.

The new version I mentioned two months ago is finally out!

If you have already been using OrigamiDraw, you will see a startup window warning you that I have changed the order of entry for the Mirror function. I apologize for making you change your habits but I think you will feel it more natural. You will also appreciate that the Mirror function and the Angle N-Section now work with parallel folds.

If you install it for the first time, you will be led through the learning process a little bit better than before. If you miss it, just go in Settings and see all the help options, including a link to some tutorial pages on my website.

The site was improved as well. Most importantly, it is now ad-free! Then, I can now add videos that you can pause, rewind, skip, or change the speed at will, so it is easier to follow long demos like the frog on the front page. And I added a Privacy Policy, in case you were worried.

For more details and some demos, see my blog entry.

Check it all out! And let me know if you like it.

The new version of OrigamiDraw is out and it is a major revision!

Yet, you won’t notice anything until you learn a new gesture: swipe from the STOP button to inside the drawing area. And ta-da:

Image

Yes, I know, X-ray view is much easier to implement than an outside view that would require solving the layer ordering problem. Still, it gives you a good idea of how your model looks like and what goes where. You can also be sure there is always one and only one answer, as long as all flat-foldability theorems are satisfied. If they are not, you will get the usual view with symbols telling you exactly what is wrong.

The X-ray view is presented on top of your CP. This saves you the bother of a second window that would be cumbersome on a small screen. Even more importantly, you will notice that a face of your CP has turned orange. It is a face that is in common with the X-ray view. It is like all the other faces have been folded around this orange one. You can move around the X-ray view to any face of your CP and see where this face lies in the model:

You can come back to normal drawing mode leaving the X-ray view in place and use it as a reference:

If you no longer need it, you can dismiss it with the same swipe from the STOP button.

So, doesn’t this deserve a version 2.0? Let me know how you like it!

Just a week since version 2.0 and I already have 2.1! I thought it would take me longer.

It is only a minor revision but one that we needed badly. Since we have almost 2,000 CPs on our iPad, it had become difficult to find the one we need. So, it was time for a search function:

There are also small improvements for Parallel and Axioms 5 through 7. They work now in all edge cases, when chosen vertices are already on the folds onto which you want to fold them. It is not very important, but it adds fluidity to the workflow. And that is important, isn’t it?

One week for the previous version, nine months for this one. Sorry to have kept you waiting!

Version 2.2 has new features for origami creators of all kinds, from box-pleaters to specialists of 22.5 and tessellations, users of Orihime and diagrammers. You can see the details on my blog: https://origamidraw.wordpress.com/2020/ ... ersion-2-2. One important thing to know is that long-press now replaces press-and-drag as it is the new standard across all Apple devices.

As a teaser, here is an image that summarizes three of the new features: an increased maximum grid size, a new 22.5-degree function and refreshed button designs.

Let me know what you think!
