Translate Origami Terms to Spanish?

Post by Gerardo »

Hi,

I'm trying to translate the Types of Origami section (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origami#Types_of_Origami) from the Origami entry in Wikipedia to spanish, cause the entry in spanish (http://es.wikipedia.org/wiki/Origami) lacks that info. I've done quite well so far, but I don't know how to translate to spanish three technical terms; can you please help me?

How do you say in spanish:
  • 1. Golden Venture
    2. Pureland Origami
    3. Tessellations
Thank you, I hope you can help me out :)

In that case, maybe you can do me a favour. :)
I've got a page with some translations here: http://www.happyfolding.com/dictionary/1/3

The terms you were asking for aren't listed there, but maybe you can check whether the translations on my page match yours. By the way, some helpful origami enthusiasts contributed these translations, I don't know Spanish myself.

3. Tesselacão (singular) Tesselacoes with a squiggle above the "o"(plural)

That's how I would say it in portuguese brasileiro, if that helps at all. =/

*note english is my first language and I have only been speaking portuguese for 4 years.

Hi Sara, I reviewed your dictionary and found some mistakes:

bone folder should be doblador de hueso

On "cupboard fold" your translation is fine it says what cupboard fold would translate to, however over here at least it is called door fold which would transfer as "pliegue puerta"

the first tranlation for enlarged view ampliar zoom, is gramatically wrong, the other two are fine.

equilateral should be equilátero

folding bone is again wrong, it should be doblador de hueso

inside reverse fold both versions are wrong, it should be: pliegue inverso hacia adentro

same with outside reverse fold, it should be pliegue inverso hacia afuera

the first translation for shrunken view shares the same mistake as enlarged view, the other two translations are fine

For swivel fold I would prefer pliegue pivote (if you agree with me that a swivel pivots at one point)

turn the model over is almost right, but the word "la" is redundant, should be dar vuelta al modelo

the first tranlations for zoom in and zoom out are like shrunken view's first, wrong!

Hi Gerardo:

Since "Pureland Origami" is a term to describe a style, it is not neccesary to translate it. I'd just explain what is it about. If you want a translation for me will be "Origami Puro"
"Tesellation" also means "teselación"

Hi Sara:

Another translations for some terms are:
"turn the model over" = "voltear el modelo"
"Inside reverse fold" = Pliege inverso interno
"Outside reverse fold" = Pliege inverso externo
"kite base" is also known as "base de papalote"
"spread sink" = "hundido extendido"
"spread squash" means "aplastado extendido" but is doesn't makes sense in spanish. I'd better use "hundido extendido"
"enlarged view" = "vista ampliada" only. The other two doesn't make sense here in Mexico
"shrunken view" for me is just "vista reducida" The other two doesn't make sense here in Mexico
"Zoom in" is just "ampliar" or "vista ampliada"
"Zoom out" is "reducir" or "vista reducida"

I strongly disagree wit this. "teselación" is not a word in spanish, people just thought that if in English it was teselatio, in Spanish it should be teselación, but it is not. There is a word in Spanish and the word is teselado.

Hi Brimstone

You are so right! I've just looked for that word in the RAE and it does not exist. So "Teselado" is the only right translation for "Tesellation" and the plural would be "Teselados", right?

Unfortunately for our language, the word "teselación" is the most common translation of "tesellation". If you google that word, you will get over 34,000 results including a wikipedia link... In contrast, if you do the same for "teselado" you only get 24,000 results and no wikipedia link  :(

Thank you for letting us know

Thanks, Brimstone and syribia for the corrections. They're in the dictionary now, and will hopefully help some others out there. :)

for my two cents

crimp corrugado diagonal
enlagred view acercar
inside reverse reverso interno
outside reverse reverso externo
pleat corrugado paralelo or corrugado en tablas
precrease marcar
shrunken view alejar
spread squash apachurrar
for wrap envolver is fine but you could also use pasar la hoja

hope my extra ramblings don't bother you, and I don´t get in to trouble

But crimp doesn't mean diagonal pleat. It means a combination of two reverse folds.

yeah well maybe it doesn´t work well
but since corrugated means alternating mountain-valley folds I thought than maybe we could use it like an image of mountain valleys touching by a single point in an angle.

anyway one of my students came up with it, and it is somewhat of a mouthful but seems to work. Or we could try something along the lines of
doble reverso en pivote
or
pelliscado angular

???
