Legality Question

Post by Baltorigamist »

So I want to post a random number in my sig on another site just for the lulz. I was wondering if it's legal, since it can be taken as a phone number. If someone assumes it is and calls it (thinking it's me), who would be at fault for any legal issues that would come out of it?

And I was thinking I'd open this topic to anyone who has any questions about legal issues.

Jenny, Jenny who can I turn to
You give me something I can hold on to
I know you'll think I'm like the others before
Who saw your name and number on the wall
Jenny I've got your number
I need to make you mine
Jenny don't change your number
8 6 7-5 3 0 9 (8 6 7-5 3 0 9)
8 6 7-5 3 0 9 (8 6 7-5 3 0 9)
Jenny, Jenny you're the girl for me
You don't know me but you make me so happy
I tried to call you before
But I lost my nerve
I tried my imagination
But I was disturbed
Jenny I've got your number
I need to make you mine
Jenny don't change your number
8 6 7-5 3 0 9 (8 6 7-5 3 0 9)
8 6 7-5 3 0 9 (8 6 7-5 3 0 9)
I got it (I got it), I got it
I got your number on the wall
I got it (I got it), I got it
For a good time call
Jenny don't change your number
I need to make you mine
Jenny I've got your number
8 6 7-5 3 0 9 (8 6 7-5 3 0 9)
8 6 7-5 3 0 9 (8 6 7-5 3 0 9)

Um... steingar??

@Baltorigamist, anyways, I don't think it's illegal because you can write whatever number you want and most people won't assume its your phone number or anything unless its in the correct format, for example, I don't know you're location but if you are in the us the number would have to be (***)-***-**** or if it was a street address:

**** Streetname Str
Cityname Stateinitials Zipcodenumber

So I guess youre okay and just post it

DISCLAIMER: IF YOU ARE DETAINED OR FINED ANY AMOUNT OF MONEY YOU WILL HOLD ME, THEUNCHOSENONE, NOT RESPONSIBLE IN ANY WAY, DIRECTLY OR INDIRECTLY. MORE LEGAL CRAP HERE.

;) lol but seriously I think it's okay.

I thought the lyrics of the one-hit-wonder Tommy Tutone's one hit would answer your question, but you're either too young or perhaps merely dense. Let's try again.

The number in the song, which Tommy Heath (Tommy Tutone's lead singer) made up out of his own pointy little head, was broadcast out of every radio in every city in the country. Yes it got called a lot. Lots of folks had that number and didn't like it. Lots didn't and wanted it (good advertising perhaps). Nonetheless, the aforementioned artists still known to the best of my knowledge as Tommy Tutone were never litigated against for broadcasting someone's number virtually everywhere.

I suspect the OP would be fairly safe posting a phone number number on an obscure web site.

I don't know....

I haven't even heard of Tommy Tutone so I guess I don't listen to good music or I'm too young.

It's actually my DA, which happens to be linked in my sig.
I haven't gotten any calls yet. Can't say the same for the number I posted.

I think it depends on the general association of the name "Hobbes" with the character. I don't know of any other usages.
Brian Chan and Satoshi Kamiya have models labeled with trademarked names (i.e., Sephiroth, Cait Sith, etc.), so I think you should be fine unless you decide to publish it. Thn you'd need to somehow secure the rights to the name unless you alter the model name.

Too young I imagine. The song came out in 1981, when many of you were yet a gleam in your parents eyes. Still, Google is always your friend.
