I really enjoyed the Pendragon Series. They are very imaginative. The His Dark Materials books are also some of my favorites, along with Animal Farm.

I've read too many good books the give them in order, but a few of my favorites are the inheritance cycle, the pendragon series. Can't think of any more off the top of my head.

EDIT: just remembered, things by Rick Riordan such as Percy Jackson or the Kane Chronicles.

So many favorites in so many different genres: P.D. James and Peter Lovesey for mystery, Greg Bear and Peter Hamilton for SciFi.

I'm always (re)reading Shakespeare's plays, particularly the histories and tragedies, and Montaigne's essays.

For just general amazingness: John Banville, David Foster Wallace...

anything out there and unusual. I love Robert Rankin, Terry Pratchett, etc. Also, in the non fiction i read quite a lot. at the moment I'm reading the mind of god (about life the universe and everything), but I've also read the original version of life on earth, and the shield of achilles. mind you i hate the lord of the rings, as well as most mainstream series - all seem to have the same plot structure, and it gets boring. don't even get me started on twilight.

Terry Pratchett, Douglas Adams and Steph Swainston. the last one, Swainston, obviously isnt that popular, but definitely worth reading. I can give she continues the good old british tradition of funny yet deep in a convoluted way writers.

Awesomely funny. I like the drawings mostly though.
