Computer crash

Post by araknoid »

So yesterday Vista crashed again, this time because of some alchool 120% driver. Damn.

All those lost info.

Anyway I thought let's open a topic about computer crashes. The idea is, when your system goes down the drain, you post. I guess those infos could turn out to be interesting over time.

(Operating system and why it went guru)

Alcohol driver?
what's the driver for? I installed Alcohol too, but didn't need a driver.
Was that causing your hard disk to corrupt? I hope not. hates when that happens.

I'm still using XP proffesional I bought some years ago. I guess Vista isn't compatible for some older softwares.

yeah. and older hardware drivers (uff the handycam!)
it's been running here for 3 months now and this is the 2nd crash, first time was because of some sort of virus.
but it's not a bad operating sistem, i was on 2000 (all versions) for a long time and found it a nice improvement.
too bad crashes always spoil all the fun...
and in dragonshard the umbragen were going to be unlocked in 3 or 4 missions! arg!

Alcohol installes a virtual DVD/CD drive and of course needs a driver for that.

I seldom have crashes because I use industry products (term?) even at home... I can't even remeber my last blue screen. I am pretty sure, that the "get it as cheap as possible"-mentality is the daemon that causes most of the crashes.
there are only 3 rules to male your life much easier:
1. never install your system with only a single partition
2. save all your important stuff onto the second partition
3. use a imaging software like ghost or acronis to lighten up your life :)

Yes, I meant in my experience I never had to install a driver after I installed Alcohol. Seems that it's integrated in the Alcohol software itself.
But in Araknoid's case it's probably because of the Vista OS requires another driver for incompatible softwares.

in vista, when the installation of alchool is almost done, the os asks if you want to install the driver (recognized as unidentified).
vista does this all the time - asks you if you are really sure, asks if you are you, etc. etc. before doing anything that could be dangerous.

dragonshard it's a old d&d version of warcraft

i usually buy budget games, here the prices are absurd for a new product (well here the things aren't going well at all) and i'm too old for internet games... like, you know, that old school scenario where man is alone against the machine ahah

but i will rush to the shop when spore gets released

Hey,
Well, I would say that Vista still needs lots of fixes. And not only that, old software does have to change things to work with Vista as well. So, Alcohool may need some changes (along with Vista fixes) to work correctly.

As Chris said, having at least 2 partitions on your HD is the best way to save you from headaches IF something wrong comes to your system installation. A Hard Disk crash is the worst case here.

I have used Alcohool sometimes and never had troubles, but them I was using Windows XP.
Now I'm with Linux. It's a totally different system. And never had any system crash. No, I'm not saying it's the perfect system. But it's a better working environment! For entertaining and most simple daily jobs, Windows is still the system to use.
May the shwartz be with you! ;)

what release/type/kind of linux are you using? would you recommend it for stability or for some specific purpose (web flexibility/security/control. etc.)

Oh, hi,
Well, Linux itself is just a "kernel", this is, where all the core things happen.
Then there comes the distributions (or Distros, as it's often called).
I'm currently using Kubuntu (which is the Ubuntu but using a different Desktop - as I said, it's a completely different world).
When someone needs that "easy" plug and use, install and use things, then I don't really recommend using Linux at all. It's still not there yet. But it's pretty close!
It IS much more secure than Windows. It is more stable too. And if you are the kind of person who like to explore everything, then you will have the system in your hands! It's not hard to learn/use Linux. It's just completely different from Windows.

Although, what I really like about this thing is that I have almost all programs that I need for free. I mean, they are open source and free.
For gaming, well, I have to use Windows.
Although I'm pretty sure things will change in the near future for the Linux Gamers 8)

All in all, if you want help with anything about changing or reconfiguring your system, let us know. I will do my best to help and I'm sure there are another people in here that will do it too! :)

Best regards,
May the shwartz be with you! ;)
