I used 24cm kanji with a patterned back side (it came with a 50-sheet kami package that I bought in Japan)

Somehow I really like the model "Stranded On A Desert Island" by Jeremy Shafer. After folding it two times I already new it by heart. Today I had some time on a long train ride home, so I folded it from 7.5cm (3") Japanese Foil. The island turned out smaller than a 1 Euro-Cent coin.
