Each mask is folded from a single sheet of clear cellophane
The color is produced by placing the cellophane on a TV, Computer Screen, or IPAD then viewing the results with polarized lenses or filters like 3D glasses or Polarized Sunglasses.
As you rotate the lens the colors will change

I updated my model "A Dragon" from a couple of months ago. I did some pretty basic maths, popped over to reference finder and started folding. I added a strip graft down the middle for toes and a more detailed (6 horned!) head.

A ute, designed for ODT Round 1, which I ended up winning by default.

I recently created a “Birefringent Color Wheel” so that I could further explore the angles and layers of folds needed to maximize visual effects. It is a mixture of science (optics) and art to produce this newer medium of artistic expression. This video shows a number of designs for a single sheet of clear cellophane rotated between polarized light filters. I used an iPad with a white screen display as the base polarized layer and a Polarized film as the top layer. A single sheet of cellophane folded into a Uniquely designed origami fold is placed between these layers. All layers can be rotated independently to produce different visual effects. I have been experimenting with this medium for about 10 years.

I will show the Color wheel and how to make this tool in a later video.

This is my first post on this entire forum so I'm still figuring out how it works. I'm somewhat confused about how to attach images so I hope this works.



Anyway, this is a meerkat I designed. It's my first design, but I'm very proud of it. This is folded from one uncut 12" square of unryu backed with generic black paper. The main issues right now are as follows:
- The flap that forms the eye and its color change tends to lie slightly away from the head. I can usually control this problem but it can be a nuisance when folding it with thicker paper.
- The flap I used to make the tail comes from the same paper used to make the legs, meaning they're very hard to separate. This also means that to have the tail begin higher up, it loses a decent amount of length. The reverse folds used to do this also sometimes fall out from inside the body, which is frustrating.

I don't think these issues are very serious though. Let me know if you have any suggestions for how I could improve the model.

That's really good for a first design!
My only suggestion would be to play with the paper usage (see if you can achieve the same level of detail in the head with less paper, for example). That will give you more to work with for the legs and tail.
There are also a lot of design techniques which you'll learn eventually; perhaps you already know a few of them. But, regardless, this is a great start.

My most recent design is for this month's design challenge. I'm trying to finish it up in the next week or so.

Thanks so much! I don't know very many design techniques yet, though I do have Robert Lang's ODS2, so I will try and familiarize myself with them. As for your suggestion, I've considered it. As of now, I use the top 3/16 of a diagonal sheet for the head. I initially tried 1/4, which didn't work out. However, I use the corners of the sheet to make the arms and hands, which can pose an issue. If I were to use a smaller portion for the head while keeping the same design, this would leave a proportionally very large amount of paper for the arms: too much, in fact. Even though it would result in more than enough paper for the legs and tail, I'm just concerned that the proportions of the design would be severely skewed.

Anyway, thanks for the advice. I will try it!

I've been aware for a while of the multitude of dragons folded for the bird base - it seems unexpectedly well-suited for creating satisfying and fun to fold dragons. Even Kamiya's 'Ancient Dragon' is based off of the simple bird base dragon, with grafting to add detail such as toes and the head spikes. With this in mind, I doodled a first draft of this dragon one day at school. It turned out unexpectedly cute, and since then I have refined the design to this:

It's a lot of fun to fold, hopefully I'll get around to diagramming it someday.
