Project Ryu Zin 3.5 --> 2024

Post by e-mo »

Hello all,

I am a patient folder and have been interested in folding the Ryu Zin 3.5 for a very long time, since it I first saw it. I guess all of you agree, that it is an amazing masterpiece in the world of origami.
Now, I dare to give the ryu zin a try and hopefully I will be able to fold it by 2024, the year of the dragon!
I am intending to donate that dragon to a local pagoda in Frankfurt once it is done in 2024.

So far, I have collected a lot of information and read a lot in this forum.
I am still not clear what strenght of paper is best to fold with.

This will the process:

- buy the book (I do have the CP and could get a pdf version of that book online, but I think it is worth to have this book in hardcover version in my shelves.
- buy the right paper to fold that model:
--> will be a role of 450m x120cm of kraftpaper, with a paperstrenght of 40gr/m² (or should it be 50gr/m² ?)
https://www.farberlin.shop/product/cs-m ... oessen-157
- precrease the sections first
- testfolding of particular parts before applying it on the mastersheet
- getting support in this forum when facing problems...

I will post news and progress here...and hopefully will be completed by 2024 :-)

Cheers,

Good luck, e-mo! Great that you plan to donate it :)
I’m a young folder from the U.S. I love folding complex models and I’m beginning to design my own.

Good luck! People suggest that 1x1 or 2x2 meters is best, but any size probably works. 40 gr/m^2 sounds like it will work to.

Hi....

Thanks for the proposal! At home, my space is very limited, so I probably will try with 1 X 1m.
Today my book from Satoshi finally arrived. Did order it straight from japan..
The project can start now...

This is a collection of photodiagrams made by Daniel Brown (aka Kareshi), which I'm finding very helpful with folding the ryujin. There's also a discord server made just for getting help with ryujin but I feel like I'm plugging discord all the time so just lmk if you want the invite.

Also, I think 1x1m will work, but may be too small for shaping scales. I'm using two sheets of 60x120 cm tracing paper, and after I finish precreasing them I'm gonna tape them together into a large square.

How far are you now?
Are you also doing some documentation of your steps and foldings?
I will do that, so later I will recall how it did what with what special hints etc...

Yeah, I'm trying to film a time lapse. I filmed precreasing the lower half but didn't bother to film the top half since it's mostly the same stuff. I'm also counting the hours on a spreadsheet because I'm a nerd... I've logged about 13 hours for all the precreasing (including scales) except the head.

I only logged 11 and a half hours for full precreasing, including scales, and 30 hours overall, with out scale shapings, which would probably add an extra 10 or so. You will definitely have trouble shaping scales on a 1 metre square, but it's apparently doable.

Hi...

I checked the the helping files in the googledrive and was wondering, if this guide is ment to show how to do the ryu zin 3.5 by glueing several parts into one, or doing it as a complete whole one sheet?

Most of the lessons are testfolds for small parts of the model, only a few are making the final thing. It's also split into lower half and upper half and then glue together at the end, but you can do it from a single square with the same method if you just do both sides at once, which is what I did.

thanks for the feedback.
Yes, I also want to try a single square as this is a model you do not temp to redo again and again as it will be very time comsuming.
Probably I will be very active soon in the Guiding-Group for Ryu-Zin...

Hi!

I was wondering how your project is going. What are your thoughts so far?
Also, you mention having bought the book. Is it the World of Super Complex origami, or is there a solo book for Ryujin?
Did the paper worked out ok?

Cheers,

To answer your book question, you can find the CP on his website (folders.jp) or you could have a hard copy in that book(of the cp) there is no seperate book.
I hope this answered your question,

I havent been here for awhile...so the latest update...
The project unfortunately failed...respectively is a bout to fail.

My brother-in-law, who is japanese, brought me the book, but still I just dont have the time to figure out everything as it is really complex.

Well...the bright side of it is...now I have another 12 years to do the project :P

If there is any local enthusiast in Germany who is interested to fold the Ryu Zin as well...maybe we can try it together :-)

Cheers and have a wonderful time...
