Finally finished Lang's Scorpion folded from 30 cm shadow fold. This is the model from Origami Insects II.

I regretted the small size when thinning the legs with those two 1/3 valleys but I'm glad to finish this model. I like the elegance of the design of the model, I can't say that I know of any other scorpion model that is so economical to be so large at the end AND have correct variable leg length. It really is a tour-de-force of optimal design.

But it was not fun to fold. Still I would like to come back to this someday when I'm a better folder.

An interesting design to fold, the legs have to be folded out asymmetrically.

Last week's other miniature fold : Komatsu's Santa. Quick and fun, albeit quite conceptual...

This is Takashi's Giant Japanese Salamander folded from 35 cm tant.

I folded this from the crease pattern challenge in the recent JOAS magazine. I haven't solved a CP in so long, and I really thought I would fail. Could do with better shaping, but I'm pleased.

The reference I wanted in that thread turned out to either be not critical or my procedure did find the correct location. It turns out my real problem is that I devoted a bit too much paper to the point splitting to produce the toes and I missed the fact that the rear and front toes are not supposed to be split the same way. Oops.

my kids asked me to make a paper plane for them to play, so i made some research in utube. A bit different because there's a fin on top of the paper plane.

actually this model can be fun to fold. throw out purism. measure the references by pencil and mark them out. you will be much happier, i promise. i also suggest you buy an embossing pen (what nicolas terry refers to as a "precreasing tool" on origami-shop) and use that to crease the odder reference points. in general if you do this, you will reduce the stress of any model. particularly with the scorpion, where it's easy to get disoriented if you find all the landmarks by just folding.

All the best airplanes have fins. They're called vertical stabilizers and help the aircraft fly straight.
