WOW that is small : D

I stumbled upon a branching fractal design, primarily by accident. I think it might be a relative of Fujimoto's hydrangea tessellation, but I don't have the instructions for it, so I can't say for certain. Anyway, here it is:

That fractal thing is pretty cool. It'd be interesting to see it go on to a few more levels of depth, but I guess you'd need some pretty thin paper for that...

I like your connected cranes design, and I think it actually looks really nice with the box shape under them.
It's different enough in shape from Jeremy Shafer's one that I don't think you need to worry about trying to eliminate it.

The layers mostly sit on top of each other in the fractal, so I think if I start with a much larger piece of paper, I can go more levels down without having to worry about thickness. I hope to do that this weekend, and if I manage it, I'll post pictures. There is some chance I'll even try to make it branch in four direction rather than just the one.

I'm also going to try to diagram my connected cranes with the base. I'm also going to see if I can, in theory at least, eliminate the base, just as a fun mental exercise

I've made a compromise towards my original goal of shrinking the base to zero, and am instead settling on a smaller base which is fully perpendicular to the cranes.

Here are some pictures of a test fold. Forgive the low quality of pictures and folding.

Clearly the other three squares need to be turned in to cranes, but this is a promising start.

Here's the finished test fold for my 4 cranes with minibase. There is a clearly a lot of room for improvement.

You're certainly making good progress on minimising the platform under the birds.
That last variation looks very nice!

I think the flower was probably too big. I tried a smaller, white lotus, but had trouble with the stem, and it really needed a different color blossom or cranes... otherwise, too much white. But here's the best picture of it:



I'm considering rubberizing, plasticizing, or otherwise water-proofing the interior and actually using it as a tiny planter

Yes indeed! I was thinking it looked a bit like a vase. Well done!

And what is probably the last in this series until I get a better crane-vase folded:



Four sheets of paper: one for the crane-vase, one for the stem, two for the lotus (namely, the lotus and a piece of paper to hold the lotus and stem together).

The crane-vase is my design, the lotus is a traditional model, I believe.

I've created (probably recreated... I'd be surprised if this hadn't been thought of before), an 'adapter' for the traditional lotus to connect it to a stem.




Since it is based on the Kawasaki twist, I don't know that I'm allowed to post a CP...

WOW nice now all you have to do is put your cranes in with one paper and that would be even more EPIC!

More base reduction for my four cranes. Unfortunately, the paper thickness becomes a problem. I'm also not sure if the process of thinning the base that the cranes sit on can be repeated ad infinitum. It would be neat if the base could essentially be reduced to zero.
