The crane strips remind me a lot on a picture series of a guy folding the thousand cranes from one long strip of paper. As far as I can remember the cranes all had shared wings but it was a pretty impressing project.

No, I hadn't intended that, but I like your interpretation With thin enough paper you can hide the extra paper more easily if you want. But perhaps I should do something interesting with it instead!

That does sound pretty amazing... I doubt very much I have the patience to try for 1000 of them

Reminds me of Kawasaki's turtle cranes in Roses, Origami, & Math.

I have that book, but didn't remember the turtle cranes. Just looked it up though, and yeah it looks pretty similar. Nothing new under the sun, I suppose

Though your cranes are not turtle-ish and are actually very nice looking. The turtle cranes Kawasaki shows look somewhat...bloated.

Razzmatazz, thank you for your kind words It took a little doing to get the neck and tail extended and I'm pretty happy with the result. Hopefully, I'll manage to make diagrams at some point. I've not done diagrams before, but it would be very much fun to try, time permitting.

Combining two of the (likely previously thought of) techniques I've come up with. Right now it is just a cross, but I'm hoping to make a branching fractal, or at least something that looks like a branching fractal

Kinda hard to see from the picture, but here is my spiral proof of concept. I got several things wrong, but I think it might work with some adjustments.

One level of vortex. Kind of hard to see in the picture (still kinda hard to see in real life too, actually o_O). Paper thickness is definitely an issue. Eyeballing parts of this probably didn't help the finished product

My attempt at adding a face to Takashi's Buddha:



Note, this face is based off a picture of one of Yoshizawa's Buddha masks.

It definitely needs some work, but I'm not unhappy with it as a start. Any thoughts on improvements and adding shaping are appreciated.

Excellent face. I would suggest emphasizing the chubbiness of the face, but you seem to already have done that. Very good.

Wow, amazing! I think the head's quite big, actually. I'd suggest to make the head smaller just a tad bit.

I definitely agree that the head is disproportionately large relative to the body, so that's something I'll have to work out for sure.

I think folding it out of large size paper might help too... the head is hard to manipulate at the smaller sizes.
