spiritofcat VS Langko - Informal Design Duel

Post by spiritofcat »

Three topics to choose from:

1. Creatures with long tails (Snowleopard, Lemur, marsupilami, etc)

2. Furniture and Appliances (Chairs, Tables, Fridges, TVs, Game Consoles, etc.)

3. Food, from supermarket to plate (That is, food in the forms that we collect or consume it, not the whole animal or plant.)

Paper:
Are you happy to work small?
One rectangle with the shortest side not longer than 15cm? (That includes squares of course.)

Deadline:
Is two weeks good for you?
We can extend it as we approach it if need be.

Hmmm... I would like to go topic 1 but I think 15cm might be a bit too small for some of those models... I am happy to go no less than 30cm for that topic. But if your not happy with that I am cool with that and I will pick topic 2 or 3. And 2 weeks is fine for a deadline :)

Yeah, okay. You can go up to 30cm if you want.
I probably won't use paper that large myself, but you're welcome to.

Lets get to it then! Two weeks from this post is when it ends.

Cool, thanks! My normal paper size is 50cm so 30cm is still a challenge for me :)
Good luck!

Okay, here's a quick first draft from me.
Folded from an 8cm x 8cm square of receipt paper.

I really want to make a snowleopard, but this experiment has turned out more like some kind of anteater.
Still, I feel like I'm headed in the right direction. I've got the right number and approximate length of flaps.
It's all just fine tuning from here on.

Quetzal
Designed and folded by me from a 30cm uncut square of tissue foil. Boxpleated on a grid of 32. Hope you like :)

I hope this fits the category of long tails, if it doesn't, tell me and I will try and come up with something else!

Very nice! That tail is longer than the rest of the body, so I'd say it counts for sure!

I've folded a few more drafts of my design but haven't got around to taking photos of them yet.

I finally got around to taking photos of my second and third drafts of this design.

The second draft brought a more cat-like posture, but I wasn't happy with how the head turned out or with the open back.

The third draft was much more pleasing, with a more closed back and a decent feline head, but I feel the limbs are still a bit too little and spindly.

I'm going to try and work on improving it some more today, but with the deadline at 9am on Wednesday it doesn't look very likely that I'll be able to come up with anything as magnificent as that parrot.

Okay, here's my final revision.
Folded from a square of 15cm sides.
I managed to get the back legs looking thicker, and I got the tail all smoothed out.

Should I start the poll now, or wait until the official deadline just after 9am tomorrow?

You can start it now if you would like. I'm not going to enter anything else so unless you want to enter something else go ahead and start the poll :)
