ODT 3 Round 4 chesscuber98 vs shortloldude

Post by chesscuber98 »

Alright sorry for the long wait, i was thinking of challenging topics.
So here they are-
1) Simple renditions of Complex models: Look at this for reference : viewtopic.php?t=5801
Only i want to modify this a bit.
-No grids more than 8x8.
-The Model should represent a single design. For example if you are doing Kamiya's Unicorn, your simple version should have a long wavy tail like the original.

2)Heavy Round animals: i was thinking on the lines of Elephants, Rhinos, Hippos etc

3) 5 folds: Make a model using 5 folds or less.(Not steps). The five fold model should be an object or an animal. It should not be abstract.

Rules:
1 sheet of paper, No cuts, no glue,

For (3), does that mean a preliminary base uses 4 of the 5 folds allowed?

After you make the base you will have only a single fold. I dont think that will help much. I was thinking on the lines of the one fold stegosaurus and the one fold elephant.

I thought the one fold stegosaurus is abstract, so can I get a bit of clarification there?

It's not abstract, it's just a minimalist representation of a stegosaurus.
Abstract would be a shape that doesn't represent a thing.

Yes by abstract i would mean somethig like Paul Jackson's one fold models. They are simply shapes and do not represent anything.

Here we go, my first entry,
Image
Mammuthus Primigenius Simplified.
I focused on the tusks and the trunk like the original.
It took me about 26 steps.
Hope you like it.

Around 20 steps, but if I were to ever create a way for others to reproduce it, it would be more like 28 steps or so for clarification on certain steps. It has the pleated body, the chest, and the color changed wings of the original model.

My model was from a waterbomb base, not a grid. I have no problem with your new model as long as you can do 3 things for me.

1)Show/explain/justify how it is truly origami and not just papercraft (it looks like curled paper, not folded paper)

2)how it only represents a single design as per your rules and which specific model it represents, as chris palmer seems to have made multiple flower towers

3)show where chris palmer states his flower towers (whichever specific tower you based this model off of) is complex.

Also as a side question, Fishgoth stated the models submitted had to be a square in the monthly challenge you referenced for the rules, but that model does not look like it was created from a square. Do the models have to abide to the rules stated in the monthly challenge or not?

Okay-
1) Origami is any paper folded with no cuts and no glue. Many Vietnamese Origamists use this curling technique so i felt it was ok to do so.
2) This was to represent his 12 fold variation as it was most circular looking and is the most popular. As you can see my representation is also circular.
3)If you have seen between the folds, I seem to recall Chris Palmer calling this complex and taking a really long time to fold it. Since i myself have tried this model I know that there are a lot of 3D steps and that the collapse is very difficult.
Oh i forgot to mention you can use any shape of paper in the Rules. This can be acheived by a square as well.
If you are not okay with the model i can remove it, besides i already have an entry.

I just think it looks like you took a strip of paper and twirled it around a pencil, not spent time to create an entry using the best of your ability for a competition.

There are a few models that are made with curls, but can you not see the difference between what you created and Nguyen Tu Tuan Wizard model? I think you should do what you wish with the model, in the end the voters would decide if your model is acceptable and vote for you.

I also think that entering more than one model is a bit odd, why not just submit the one you think turned out best? Shouldn't a worse model go against you in the voting?

Again, it is up to you and the voters, I have no problems with it if you really put in your best effort and it turned into this model.

I accept that it is not a great model for entering in a contest so i am withdrawing it.
Are you alright with me using rectangular paper though?

In your rules, you leave it open to any shape, but for the topic I picked you said to use the rules Fishgoth came up with. That being said, I have no issue with using non-squares, but clarification would be nice in case there are any other rules that may be changed a bit from Fishgoth's post.
