Monthly CP Challenge: October 2013

Post by Razzmatazz »

This months CP challenge is Noboru Miyajima's Common Raccoon.
(http://www.h5.dion.ne.jp/~origami/e/common_raccoon.html)

Note that there are two raccoons, one with a simple tail and the other with a striped one. I will advise you to try the striped one first, but if that is too difficult (as that is the case for a lot of folders) you can surely do the simple one.

Here is a picture of the final and CP of the [more] complex one (both owned by Noboru Miyajima):

Rules:
- The submission must have been folded this month.
- Have fun!

The judge for this challenge is Langko.

Well I was going to do Brian Chan's maple leaf in celebration of the season of fall.

But then I realized he has diagrams freely available online and I just didn't feel that was too far. So instead of lolly gagging around looking for CPs that are alright for most beginners, I just looked at Miyajima's stuff since he has a lot of cool stuff that is simplistic in nature and doesn't require too much shaping.

You needn't print a Crease Pattern to fold from it.
What makes me wonder more, is that the colour change on the tail is quite a challenge on this model, but everyone seems to get it without any problems. Some years ago , when the diagrams haven't been published we had a topic about it and I remember some people that tried really hard and failed. After the discussion two months ago I thought that there was an agreement that only models without diagrams should be chosen to make it a fair contest. On the other hand is it everyone's own loss if he doesn't take the opportunity to challenge himself with a Crease Pattern but takes the easy way out with a diagram.

I got to agree with Anna on this one. I got the Racoon quite easily, but i struggled and struggled with the tail. I am still not sure how you guys got it done so easily.

I thought that there were diagrams. So I was right. And I think it was the challenge with the wizard by Miyajima Noburu which has diagrams in 50 Hours of Origami. But yes, I TOTALLY think that the cp's picked shouldn't have diagrams....
I would rather fail trying than fail without trying....

The tail was certainly quite tricky. I ended up with diagonal stripes(as opposed to the original straight ones) after practicing the color change on a sheet of scratch paper.

@benlewis:
Yes, it was the wizard (which i chose) and i will choose an undiagrammed cp from flickr next time (if i should win again) but i disagree about the question if the cps should have diagrams. This has already been discussed rather longly in other posts so i will keep it short: the only price for this challenge is honor - nothing material. And if someone uses diagrams and submits his fold for the challenge, his fold is worthless in my eyes and with the fold the honor. You don't need to be caught as there is nothing material to win.
@topic:
also got the racoon, also working on the tail... Might try yellerdudes solution, hope to get it up soon :)
