Weekly Design Challenge

Friendly design and folding competitions.

Do you think the models should be chosen each week for people to design?

Poll ended at December 31st, 2013, 6:25 pm

No. It limits creativity and some people may not be able to design that specific model.

Weekly Design Challenge

Post by loganorigami »

I have an idea for a new challenge and want to see if anyone would be interested. Every week you would have to design a different model. There is no judge or vote as this is not a competition, the winners will be the ones who make it to 2015 with 52 models, one per week. I think this could really get people being more creative with their designs and make a huge contribution to the origami community. There will be no topics or subjects that you have to design for, it's completely free choice.
Please let me know what you think, Logan

Great idea! I think there should be a model chosen for everyone to design each week though

Great!I was willing to have a week ver. challenge because one month was way too long :(
Maybe we can gather some diagrams and cps of participants models to make a book out of it at the end of the challenge?

Sounds great! This wip motivate me too get back into designing again :)

Kyle: I think that is a bad idea... It limits what people can fold. Better if people get free choice. That way we will also get a much greater variety in models and it will be more interesting seeing what people fold each week.

Greencube07: I like that idea with the book... Sounds awesome!

The problem for me would be that I always lack ideas. So as a suggestion, maybe it would be possible to post a list of possible subjects, to give some ideas but keep it open what to fold.

Anna: true, that's a good idea. I know at times I lack ideas as well. I just don't think having 1 set topic per week is a good idea, because let's say for week 1 the model is a squirell. It will be boring (in my opinion anyway) seeing say 10 new squirell designs at the end of the week. It may also discourage the newer designers if there squirell is compared to the more advanced designers ones. So if this design challenge is starting at the beginning of 2014 I think we can use the rest of this year putting together a list of ideas for designers to use next year if they need inspiration :)

Well, maybe the topics could be more broad, like "woodland wildlife" or something, that way we don't get all of the same animal. Or we could name a habitat, and people could design something native there. For example, if the topic of the week was desert, one person may design a cactus, one may do a lizard, etc.

I agree with langko on pretty much everything he's said, I think topics could limit designs. I'd like to hear more peoples opinions on this, so I'll set up a poll. Thanks for all the interest everyone!

I have an idea.

Maybe it could be like the ODT, with three choices per week. That way it would encourage creativity without putting too much of a limit on what people can design.
The hard part will be thinking of 156 different topics to use.
After the fall, we rise.

What about broad topics? The best example i can think of are the monthly challenges. The topic was speed and the models ranged from cheetahs and greyhounds to a running light bulb (my model :P)

@chesscuber98

I second this example with a little addition on the "broad topics" idea. Make the topics non-generic. No "mammal" topic. "Speed" was a good topic because it made you think about what you could do that is clever. It involved more than brainlessly making a base and deciding it looks most like <INSERT ANIMAL HERE ONLY TWO PEOPLE HAVE HEARD OF>.

Choosing clever topics encourages clever designing.

I think it would be interesting to put topics over a 2 week duration and swap out a topic every week. You still get one topic per week but a bit more time to mull it over in one's head.
I would go for one or two specific models each week, maybe interspersed with more general topics.

Oh and it would be cool if you could submit more than 1 design/week so that if you missed one week you could still win the challenge

Happy new year! The challenge will start next monday. It would bee good if there could be a list of people taking part before it starts, I can then edit it in to the first post. I don't know how we're going to run the topics so ideas are very welcome. Maybe each participant could suggest a topic?
