Monthly Folding Challenge: November 2014

music
everything that is related to music, like notes, a musical instrument etc...

I'm excited about having the opportunity to judge this challenge.

Here are a few more ideas for entries - Don't forget music personalities - Make a portrait of your favorite musical artist. Think about all the things that are needed in music productions - speakers et. al.
How about those off-beat musical instruments that people sometimes invent. Even Ben Franklin invented a musical instrument. What about instruments that represent particular culture. Finally how can you shape paper to make, or listen to music? I've made a few of these so maybe we can get together and form an origami band.

May I use a model I designed a while ago?

I have a Quaver (eighth note) that I designed a few months back:



I also have diagrams, if that's also valuable for judging (I don't know the general rules of these challenges).

If i understood the rules of the monthly folding challenge correctly you´d have to invent a completely new model... but as i´m quite new to the forum, i don´t know how situations like this are handled...
somebody might help?

You have to design a new model specifically for the challenge--that's how it's always been, at least.

More on-topic, I might actually enter something this month.

yes, a posted model should be new. but, if there's a small amount of models you've created before -'cause of having been in the mood to do so- and you did not publish them somewhere - who will know if they're brandnew or not.

My suggestion is that you modify the eighth note design and resubmit for this challenge - for example change the eighth Note into a Sixteenth note or make it a dotted note or add a bar.

Here is yet another idea for this challenge - Fold the "leader of the Band" - Drum Major, Director, et. al.

Ah, I was thinking of that as well at first! I like the idea of using wiring; is it throughout or only in one part?

I've decided on something a little different. Ruling on the field from firstfold: if I create an ensemble piece, i.e. two or more models, is it the set altogether that's judged or each piece individually? I've created one model and am going to start working on the second one soon.

I will judge your entry both as an ensemble and as individual pieces and choose which I feel is the most creative and effective display for this challenge. You might want to include both a display of the ensemble and separate photos that highlight unique features of the pieces. If there are sufficient good entries, I will award second and third place to additional individuals. In the case of multiple entries from a single individual I will choose what I think is the best submitted by that individual for consideration. First, second, and third will be awarded to different individuals.

Sometimes the display is more than the sum of it's parts and sometime a single part is so elegant that it outshines the ensemble. I don't want to overlook one for the other.

Alright, since most of the comments on this thread are from me, I guess it's about time for the big reveal.

My submission is called "The Paper Jug Band"

Going in reverse, from last model completed to first, this is the quintessential jug. The Jug is folded from one square of paper:

The next model is the washboard, also folded from one square of paper:



And here's a slightly angled shot to show off the serrations a little more:



Now, my favorite of the bunch, the spoons. Each individual spoons can be folded with a 2X1 rectangle, which like every other model results in a color change. Since the handles have a flat metallic design, I instead opted to use the whole square, making the color uniform, and the model more rigid.

Very creative entry! The spoons surface looks so clear! Great
