Alex,

According to the comments in the IOIO guestbook (http://ioio.su/result/guestbook), especially from Peter Stein, you're welcome to add your own interpretation instead of just strictly following the diagrams.

I'm not sure if all judges think this way, but it seems to be the case, looking at the winners from last year.

I guess it would be perfect to show that you're able to fold cleanly following the instructions in general, but at the same time add your personal touch to let your model stand out from the others (in a positive way, of course), e.g. by shaping, choice of paper etc.

I personally find it hard to find that happy medium. For IOIO 2016, my first IOIO, I mostly followed the instructions, being afraid that too much freedom would be disadvantages. This year I guess I have to be more creative to improve.

Good luck to everybody for the final days!

Hello!

Bottom details may be folded as you want. It's part wait for your own decision... :)

Difference may be received after light shaping in the last step.
Participants as always can use own shaping way ( The basic condition - structure of the model to be clearly recognized and not to mislead the judges ).

Allex could you explain what differences you mean? I'm pretty sure that the cottontop tamarin I folded from the diagrams resembles the one in the last picture of the diagram without major differences.

In the end I guess every judge will have his own set of rules he considers while judging. One might like the artistic approach the other might like clear precise folds.

Thank you for all your answers!

@Splunge
Yes for me it's also hard to choose where to fold exactly like the diagram says and where to be free. But every contestant has this problem of making decissions :D In previous ioio's I sometimes saw very free shaped Models which looked great in my opinion and wasn't votet that high than models which where shaped exactly like the diagram said. So yes it depends on how the judge votes. And for sure it's hard for the jury to say if the diagram steps where chlear when the final shaping changed a lot. So in my opinion the challenge is to find the perfekt point between being precisely and beeing not boring with final special touch :lol: Which can be great paper for example. Good luck to you too ;)

@Andrey
thank you :) Your last sentence is that what helps me. I will try to achieve that ;)

@Anna
If you search for the tamarin which Andrey testfolded for the ioio and the original fold of Kunsulu you will see Andrey folded like the diagram shows and the final picture in diagram is the original fold of Kunsulu. I sometimes do the same when drawing diagrams. Because I use the best fold I have to draw it as final picture. But I think in this case there is a difference in the structure not only in the shaping.The differences between this original fold and the diagram in my opinion are especially the color change parts. In the original the body of the tamarin has more light parts. Also the light part on the leg is shorter than in the diagram. The fold on the shoulders are different. Maybe I am wrong but I can't see how achieve the final picture only with shaping :) But doesn't matter for me. I only wanted to know how far we can go with shaping and how far we have to look on the instructions. And I think it's clear for me now :)

Here the two folds:

Dear friends and colleagues!!!

This long-awaited moment has come.
It's time to reveal the results of the Seventh International Origami Olympiad. I am proud to congratulate you on behalf of all judges!
This year's works were performed with such professionalism that until the very end all members of the Jury had absolutely no idea about who was going to win.
The challenge wasn't easy: only 50 of 156 2nd round contestants managed to complete all 14 tasks. They are highlighted with green color in the final chart.

Medals:
By tradition our Olympiad features the medal system. Essentially, each judge chooses the best works in every nomination and rewards them with bonus points equal to 30%, 20% or 10% of maximum score for a given task. Works with the highest final score are then awarded with gold, silver and bronze medals.

Team rankings:
Apart from the personal contest there is also the team ranking which considers all participants from the same country as a team. Their medals are summed: a gold medal brings 3 points to a team, a silver brings 2 points and a bronze brings 1 point.

And finally I remind you that all the jury members are mere humans and they can make mistakes. So it is perfectly natural to disagree with some of the jury's decisions.
If you have any questions or suggestions about the Olympiad, feel free to write them here or in the official group on Flickr, Facebook, Twitter.
Please post the photos of your olympiad works there.
