monthly design challenge/June 2017 - a ten year celebration

Post by firstfold »

The Monthly origami challenge has had constant entries for over 10 years. In March of 2010 an artist named Beth Moore Johnson submitted a folded Acorn and a pine cone and was declared the winner of the challenge. Today her work is exhibited at the Morton Arboretum in a recent version of the acorn created with her assistance with Kevin Box as a metal sculpture for “Origami in the Garden”. In the next few months thousands of people will walk past this sculpture.
Here are links to her original entry and as it appears today (My photo from the Morton Arboretum)
http://snkhan.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php ... 2&start=45
https://www.flickr.com/photos/firstfold/34540692656
Other winners of this monthly challenge include artists that have been featured in origami conventions around the world including Dr. Stephen O’Hanlon who started the challenge, Jon Tucker who has been a featured folder at Centerfold, Sebastian Limit who has won 7 of these challenges, Victoria Serova whose fantastic mask of Baba Yaga that beat out masks of Barak Obama and Lincoln to win a challenge, Brian Chan for his well known representation of Iron Man, Andrey Ermkov who started the Olympic Origami challenge, Hubert Villeneuve for 5 exquisite entries and one of my favorite folders Quentin Trollip who is a featured folder from Canada.
I would like to celebrate ten years of this folding challenge by encouraging as many people as possible to enter the challenge for the Month of June. You must share an on line picture of an original creation that has not been shown before. I will try to make this as easy as possible for anyone to submit an entry. The topic for June is:
“Pick a Winner” – Look over the more than 100 topics covered by this challenge and pick any topic you find interesting. You can probably fold anything you want and there will be a matching topic. You will find two lists that show all the topics at the beginning of the Forum on origami (see the link above)
As to rules, I will let you define your own rules of folding so go ahead use any material, number of sheets, method of folding, and if you must you can even cut. If you enter, please state what rules you followed in making your creation.
If you are not a member of the Origami Forum, send me an on-line link and I will enter the challenge for you.
Even if you do not plan to enter please look over the past entries for this challenge and comment on your favorite folds, who has the most wins, and who has the best multiple entries, or even who bent the rules the most by folding with odd materials (hmm – that last one sound like me).

OK, I'll try my best to create something this month but can't guarantee I will. I haven't been creating much lately. I've only created two boxes during this year.

Hope many more do participate.

In the last few months, even years, the challenge hasn't had much participation. I guess that's why I love firstfold's initiative for hosting a monthly challenge that has as much participation as possible. Hope you guys would also like that :).

I was thinking, each of us could help with that if we convince two fellow members to participate :D. C'mon lets help out! I'll start doing that myself.

This is a very rough draft list of the categories (Topics), winners, and what I thought the entry was (title). You will probably find many errors as I tired to get this up as quick as possible. The last two columns are not complete. At December 2011 I have not finished listing the winner's actual name and the entry. The winners actual name is only given if I could easily find the name listed on the forum or the original source of the entry (flickr et. al.). Please forgive my spelling and other errors and provide corrections as needed.

The challenge of December 2009 was about Final Fantasy. The winner was Anermak :).

Here's the challenge: http://snkhan.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=16&t=6265

OK, I've chosen my project. It's about the January 2008 and the February 2011 food challenges. My idea is a local snack :). It'll be a surprise for now.

I was originally going for February 2013's wearable origami challenge. I had thought about two different ideas, but I discarded them: shoe covers and a wrist wallet :).

I've decided to group all of my entries this month under one meta-topic, sour grapes. I'm going to choose my topics from months that I entered and failed to win (which gives me plenty to choose from).

I entered my previous Batman mask into the January 2016 topic, hope but this newer, darker Batman bust (which draws inspiration from his depiction in "The Dark Knight Returns") will be re-entered under the February 2015 topic, fear.

I'm using the standard rules for most challenges, with the only possible exception being that this is a two-piece model. It's made from two squares of the same size, one for the head and one for the shoulders/chest.

Hi!

I've been participating to the creation challenge on the French forum pliagedepapier.com but not yet on this forum. Thank to Gerardo for pointing me to it!

I just created a finger spinner that could be a candidate for the Action Origami topic (March 2011).

Image

If you want to fold one, I made a video tutorial:

Happy folding and spinning!

So I failed in (on, at?) my attempt :P. I couldn't fold it without adding too many layers and I really don't like how some models end up looking messy from so many layers. Anyway, I was trying to fold guava jelly in its dry leaf wrapper from a single sheet. It's a local snack and it's really yummy :)... I like the "veleño" variation.

Here's a picture; maybe someone else wants to try folding it:

This is my contribution, related to the December 2010 challenge:

Image

My rules were: fold a single square duo-colored sheet without cutting or gluing.

C'mon guys, help out! You don't have to make a award-winning model, just contribute with a little something so we can maybe have the monthly design challenge with the most entries :D!

Gerardo has suggested that I submit my recently designed Angel design, related to the August 2011 challenge. I've often enjoyed observing these challenges for their creativity and inspiration, and I'm happy to support the 10 year milestone of the competitions.

Edit: Rules used - target was to design an angel with very large wings (larger than is typical for origami models). My personal constraint was that the design must be foldable from a 6" square sheet of normal Kami; the design satisfies this goal, though the folding pictured is folded from a larger sheet.
