September 2018 monthly design challenge

Post by NeverCeaseToCrease »

Welcome to September, everybody!

For this month's challenge, we will take a break from complex box pleating, circle packing, and other complicated things and return to a style that is both ancient and contemporary. The theme is: minimalism.
You can express the older style of origami in a model similar to a traditional or Yoshizawa model, or the contemporary style by expressing something abstract, like an emotion. Hopefully, this month inspires you to try something new. I think sometimes less is more when it comes to origami.

Rules: a single square paper, no cuts, tape, or glue except MC. Another rule I'm going to put in place just for this month is to have paper no bigger than 35cm. A simple model shouldn't need anything bigger than that.

Baltorigamist will judge this month. Good luck to all!

Cmon, guys, let's see what you can come up with. I'm very intrigued by this month's topic.

I agree with Balto, this is a very interesting topic (and it's better suited to my current skillset too, I haven't finished ODS2 yet, and I won't be needing those skills this month).

Here it is, my entry to the design challenge.
ImagePhoenix by Folderp, on Flickr

A minimalist phoenix. It may not look simple, but it is. It's based on an 8x8 grid, with a simple structure and folded from a 15 cm square, inspired by Kamiya's phoenix and developed as a minimalist version of it. So there you have it, a minimalist version of Kamiya's phoenix. Still not sure if it's simple enough though...

Folded from a 15 x 15 cm (5 15/16 x 5 15/16 in) square of faux leather book cloth. Someone might have folded it before; I'll ask around.

Folded from a 6.3 x 6.3 cm (2 1/2 x 2 1/2 in) square of aluminum foil for embossing (36 caliber). I covered both sides of the foil with contact paper.

This is an image of its back.

Someone might have folded this one before as well; I'll ask around.

Here's my entry although I'm not sure it is original since it is so simple and has that 80's look or if it even classifies as minimalistic. Star/cross made from two fish bases on a single square:

That's a very small image. Could you please upload a bigger one so we can take a better look?

I'm really glad you did participate. Did you make the two fish bases from a single square? You could ask around if it had been created before like I do.

I just changed the text to clarify that the two fish bases were indeed on a single square.

I read somewhere that you mentioned a FB group where people go and ask about authors but I'm not on FB.

Wow, how do you make two fish bases from a single square? I had not heard about that before.

The group you're referring to is Spot the Creator. It was started by Nick Robinson. Very useful group! I don't use Facebook either, but I do ask someone to please show the pictures and ask on my behalf. Besides that group, I tend to also ask in the different origami forums and mailing lists in which I participate.

It could still be bigger (up to 640 pixels wide), but it certainly is easier to look at. Thank you :).
