Wonderful FolderP! Thank you.

Please remember to also share pictures of those same tatos, but when opened. OK? And you don't have to rush. If you want, you can take new pictures of all the tatos calmly and post them before October 1st ;).

Hello, I have created the following model from a 21 cm bicolor disc.
Image
I name it "Tato Moulin Rouge" (see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moulin_Rouge)
The back ground is from a poster drawn by Toulouse-Lautrec ((see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Henri_de_Toulouse-Lautrec).

A new forum member and fellow member from the Yahoo Group "ELFA-e" (Envelopes and Letter Folds Association) is participating in the challenge: Michel G

Michel already posted his submission to the challenge, but his posts must be approved since he's new here. Baltorigamist or origami_8, can you please help us with that?

In a couple of hours the month will be over and with that the deadline for challenge submissions! Will there be last minute contenders 8-[?!

I suggest you try making the walls just big enough that the tato completely closes on the center when flattened :).
Can I count on you, FolderP and NeverCeasetoCrease, to work on that ;)?

Michel G, don't forget the picture of your tato open as well.

As asked by Gerardo:
Image
Now it seems you see "the underneath of the model"!

The background of the photo is still the same poster by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec:
see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Moulin_Rouge:_La_Goulue.

OK, the challenge is closed for submissions. There were a total of fifteen tatos presented by seven contenders :D.

I have given the judges one week tops to reach a conclusion as a team. As soon as they pass it on to me I'll post it here, declaring who's the best tato creator (at least during the month), as well as judge of the October challenge and organizer of the November challenge :o. I will now officially start the October challenge.

FolderP, I'm assuming your white tatos where folded from a square and the reddish ones from an octagon. Can you please tell me if that's correct?

Sorry guys, I was on holidays, hence my lack of time to rephotograph or reply. Gerardo, you are correct in your assumptions of paper shape.

The following is the dictum by the judges:
the judges wrote:Hello, we are Sofía and Naty. In this opportunity we're helping Gerardo select the list of winners. We thank everyone for having participated and sharing with us all the models developed for the challenge. They're all very beautiful and original. We hope to continue seeing your creations in the next challenges.

Third place goes to Butterfly Tato Box.
It is a very beautiful model and it manages its dimensions quite well, both when it's opened and when it's closed. Congratulations

Second place goes to Curved Tato.
It is a very practical model, easy to handle and to store objects. It has an elegant and simple look. Congratulations.

And first place goes to Know Your North.
It is a very beautiful model which fully complies with the rules. It's perfect for storing any flat fold inside and its photos show that it was folded with care. But it's actually the winning model because its closure is quite different. Congratulations!
So dazda is oficially the month's best tato creator =D>! dazda now has the honor of judging the October challenge and organizing the one in November.

Thank you everyone for participating. I really hope you had fun in the process :).

Thank you for your kind words and third place nommination. Gerardo, Sofia and Naty.

This challenge has prompted me to start creating a vector diagram for my triangular gift bag, which ended up being the starting point for both my first and second tato. Thank you for the inspiration.

Congratulations dazda, and to everyone else who entered. Your models were all great, and most, if not all, were better than mine.

My top three were a bit different. How about guys?
  1. Know your North
  2. Blooming Star Tato
  3. Tato Box
I prefer tatos with pockets, for a letter, some thread, buttons, etc., that aren't too small when compared to the general size of the tato. Various tatos in the challenge had small pockets. I also prefer a tato with an opening that isn't too small. The dimensions of the opening determines the size of what you can fit inside the tato. So, even if the pocket isn't that small, if the opening is, then you can't make use of the whole size of the pocket. You know? I liked how dazda thought of that with her design.

Loved NeverCeaseToCrease's tato. If he had presented it completely closed it would have been among my top three. With that hole in the center its content will be partially visible. Think of a kid with a love declaration in a tato. He or she wouldn't want anything from the letter to be visible to anyone different from its receiver. Know what I mean? Or think about placing small buttons inside that tato. They can fall out. I, for example, keep a tato with very small screws; so it's important for me to have zer holes in a closed ttato.

I felt curious abut FolderP's tessellating tato with a single molecule. I would need a video of how the tato is opened and closed o,r, at least a second picture of it open to have an idea of how practical and functional it is.

Reversible Tato is very original! Grace, you have a challenge with the model. You placed the locking mechanism in the back of the envelope. That would mean that if a letter is on top of it, you won't be able to lock the tato. Had you noticed that? You would have to think of another way to lock the model without needing the back of the model.

This is just my two-cents. I'd really love to know yours.

Imagetato reversible2 by Grace Matthews, on Flickr (Original reversible tato)

Hi Gerardo, this was my first time creating tato's. I have made plenty of boxes that collapse into pinwheel shapes, but never envelopes that pull open. When I was recreating the reversible tato I made an error
Imagetato difference by Grace Matthews, on Flickr

The reversible tato should be called a reversible envelope as neither side allows paper to be placed over the centre,

however I was much happier with the closure mechanism than in the original so I left it as is.

Hello everybody, I just realized that I won the challenge! Oh wow! It's quite a surprise for me! But I am definitely happy! :) I was somehow too busy in last weeks that I even forgot to check... My apologies... I am glad that my little model was liked by the jury and Gerardo as well! I personally enjoyed playing with the tato design quite a lot as it is close to my way of thinking.

I liked a lot firstfold's idea to create a tato with more pockets, and also his curved tato. It's rather interesting that it is flat in the end! I liked also the other ideas presented, quite an interesting selection of different ideas! :) Dasa
