Monthly Design Challenge September 2019

Hi everyone. The September challenge is starting a little late... so sorry for that. Your mission is: create an original tato during this month. "What's a tato?" you may ask. It's a type of origami envelope that has certain specifications; I explain them in the rules ("What's mandatory"). Tatos are among the first types of origami that were created. They have existed since the time of the samurais. So through this challenge you'll be honoring the history of origami!

What’s mandatory
-The model must be flat.
-It must close completely and over its center.
-It must be folded from a circle or a regular polygon (equilateral triangle, square, pentagon, hexagon, etc.). Please state the shape of the sheet in your post.
-It must end up with either rotational symmetry or reflection symmetry.
-It must be opened by pulling opposite tabs, flaps, tips, pockets, etc.
-It must tend to be just as long as it is wide.
-Show your tato both closed and open.

What’s allowed
-Very little cutting. Please state if it does include cuts in your post.
-Very little gluing. Please state if it does include glue in your post.
-More than one model per origamist. Each model participates independently.

What’s recommended
-Think carefully of the material used for folding (color, texture, type of material).
-Take the best picture, or pictures, you’re able to.
-If your tato opens and/or closes in an amazing way, show that in a video.

I'll have more than one judge, they'll be local origami friends that don't participate in online origami communities (like this forum). The judges will take into consideration the stated details (shape of sheet, cuts?, glue?).

I advice against it, but if you really need to look for examples of existing origami tato to get started, you can find many examples by searching through Google Images. There's also a good number of links to diagrams at Origami Resource Center.

PS: I was owing this challenge theme since October 2016. Nine people had voted in favor of a tato challenge. It was the winning theme along with "world problems". It was a tie. I had to make an executive decision; I chose the other theme. So, if you nine are reading this: participate in the challenge! I know where you live .

EDIT: I added a rule I had missed: "It must tend to be just as long as it is wide". That's another characteristic of tatos.

ImageA Tato box by Grace Matthews, on Flickr

One piece of square paper, no glue or cuts required.

Origami Tato box. The hinge holding the box closed is the same as the one from my origami triagular gift bag, however reversed so that it closes on the inside and leaves the bottom of the box smooth and more like the traditional masu box.

I am working on another version that uses traditional boats as the hinges, however it is not closing into a neat enough tato at the moment.

Hello fellow origamists :).

OK, so we currently have little more than two weeks left for this challenge. If you (you who are reading this) aren't accustomed to creating geometric models, just try it this time. Have fun experimenting with something new and learn from the experience. Who knows... maybe you can take something that you can later use in the type of origami you usually create ;).

This is two tatos that can be opened from one folded square.

Here is an interesting use for this fold. Create a word puzzle and write the puzzle on a small sheet of paper. On a second small sheet of paper, write the answer. Put the question in the pocket of the first tato and the answer in the pocket of the second tato.

Very creative firstfold. Folded from a square?

Yes, it is from one square. Here is a video showing the opening of each of the two Tato pockets and continuing to unfold to a square.

Excellent Tato in Tato Firstfold. I love that you've made a video as well. I'm embarrassed, but glad to see that you didn't need the Facebook nudge.

This is the first time I'm designing a tato, so it's nothing spectacular. Folded from a square, the top shows a kind of star/cross pattern, and while opening the model looks like a blooming flower (which I guess most tatos do). For lack of better idea, I called it Blooming Star Tato.Since it's rather simple, it may well have been invented before.

Lovely colour and paper choice mkosmul. I don’t know enough tatos to know if it is unique, however there is beauty in simple designs

Agreed!

The last two pictures makes me think that when taking the opposite flaps and pulling the tato opens, but if you keep on pulling the same two flaps, it unfolds completely. Is that the case?

What do you mean by that? I don't know that much about Facebook .

It depends on where you grab the paper. if you grab a folded edge, it will go as far as is shown in the picture. If you grab near the very corner, it will go to a fully flat square (or tear the paper :) ).

Butterfly Tato Box.

Made the wings by folding the loose flaps in my first model into an inverted 'v' .

We're basically in the last week of the challenge! You who are reading this, try to create an original tato and post it. Become the forums best creator for a month! =D> =D> =D> 8) =D> =D> =D>

Grace159, firstfold, and mkosmul, I invite you three to create one more tato before the challenge is over ;).

I forgot to ask, was it folded from a square? I'm assuming it doesn't include cuts nor glue.
