Monthly Design Challenge March 2020

Post by Grace159 »

Origami that pops!

I am looking for models that change shape or make noise, an example of this is the traditional 'Origami Banger'
https://www.britishorigami.info/fun/banger/ or 'Fireworks' by Yami Yamauchi

Rules:
Model must be original and designed in the month of March.
Tessellations, modular, kirigami and single piece models are all encouraged.

Origamitrieste will be judging the month's challenge and proposing the April theme.

Happy folding and good luck!

This is a three piece modular that allows you to change the center pattern depending on how you hold the model. Each unit also makes a very satisfying popping sound as it snaps into the correct formation.

This looks like fun to play with. I love that it also helps to introduce the basics of geometry.

This is a small sample of the displays that can be generated using the Flexigon.

Folding a Flexigon of this type from a single uncut rectangle uses a technique I call "FOLDING THE CUT"

You create a fold that resembles a Square with an X cut in the Center. The fold only center "cut (A fold that resembles a cut)" creates a possibility for a unique fold. It is like folding a blintz through the center of the paper up to 540 degrees. Normally a blintz would stop at the center and can only be folded >180 degrees.

Imagine flipping over one quadrant of a square front to back twice while the 3 remaining quadrants lay flat and unflipped. (well somewhat flat).

The real cut Flexigon has been around for some time and I am not sure who it is attributed to. My Design is to perform this results with out actually performing a cut.

This is my favourite Firstfold. I like the size of the model and it’s sturdiness as it shifts into the different shapes.

This is a very unusual Creation for several reasons:
I knew this type of Toy as a “Click-Clack”. Others may call this creation a “Jacob’s Ladder”
1. Each letter is folded from one rectangle of dual tone card stock (14 letters “ORIGAMI” spelled out twice)
2. Two letters are placed on a black rectangle (The same letter with two different color combinations – dual tone).
3. A rectangle of Clear Contact Paper (the same size as the black rectangle) is place on top of the letter and the black paper.
4. Three clear long rectangles of overhead transparency film are folded into the Sandwich of letters, cardstock and Contact Paper.
5. The sandwich is closed and locked with overlapping layers. The long film rectangles stick out the top and bottom.
6. The Sandwich is turned over and the ends of the film rectangles are connected by folding to the next sandwich. The new film rectangles are added, and the process repeats for as many cards wanted in the “Click-Clack”.
All procedures are my original design for the parts and the way the parts are folded together. There are several other very good designs for an “Origami Jacob’s LADDER” including one by Yami Yamauchi. My design is unique in the following ways –
• The materials used to create the design.
• The addition of a design on the surface of the card that is not hidden by the straps.
• The methods used to fold each part – including the method to fold the Letters.

OK - So I thought I would top of this challenge in style - My style that is:

These two fold models are quite unique. I always try to find things that others might not think of creating with origami folds - so here goes:
