I know the topic is kinda old but I still wanted to show my efforts.
Gandalf
Designed by Eric Joisel. Folded by me without diagrams or cp. Folded it by looking at this picture: http://www-tc.pbs.org/arts/media/nuarte ... andalf.jpg
My version doesn't look anywhere near as good as the masters one but never the less I am extremely happy with the way it looks. I also included the holes on the robe like Joisel did. I know that is not exactly purist but it adds another interesting texture that I like. I hope you like it :D

Just by looking at the picture I linked above.

Oh my! I am speechless! How could you make it without diagrams and cp? Like this you could make every single origami model ever designed by humans.

I didn't know where to place it. It's not a model but it may become :)
It's little bit like a challange, well test yourselves.

Aldo Marcell already came up with a pretty realistic model of a dahlia. Unfortunately his old flickr stream with some amazing photos doesn't exist any longer. But here is one from his new stream and some that show his models at a convention:

I have reverse-engineered a few models too, although not many. "reverse-engineering" was how I started designing, though. When I liked something and I could not find diagrams for it, I tried my hand at making my own version of the subject. Here is a selection of models I have reverse-engineered from pictures:

Andrea Russo's corrugation:

Waterbomb base corrugation by Eric Gjerde:

box by Philip Shen:

I have not reverse-engineered this one entirely, but I did not understand how to collapse it based on the diagrams so I had to improvise :)

So, this is it. I have tried many more, but I failed at reproducing them. Funnily enough, I have even failed to reverse-engineer some my old designs... #-o

Wow! These are very impressive, I don't think I could figure these out just from photos... =D>
