Monthly Folding Challenge - March 2007

Post by Fishgoth »

Here's an idea for a new type of thread. We have many innovative folders and designers on this forum, who specialise in different techniques and levels of complexity. I thought it would be fun to introduce a monthly challenge. I humbly nominate myself as judge for at least the first month. And as far as prizes go, I can offer little more than my respect, and the pride of being, unofficially, the best folder on this forum ;-)

And so, the rules:

Rules (for March 2007)
-Squares only
-Any origami technique which does not involve cutting the square is allowed
-Modular models are fine
-Glue is allowed to support tuck-folds or natural pockets only
-No painting colours on afterwards, although varnishing, glossing etc is allowed
-You can post as many photos of a model as you like, but they must not be digitally manipulated, other than cropping.
-You can enter as many different models as you like.
-It can be your own design or someone elses design.
-Please enter the name of the folder and the designer for each model.
-I'll choose the winners of first, second and third prize on March 31st. I'll be disqualified if I enter myself ;-)
-I'll also come up with a new topic for April 2007 - PM me if you come up with a good one!

The Challenge

Fold a human skull. It can be realistic or stylistic. It can be single piece or multi-piece (there are 23 bones in the average human skull). It should be a skull only (although a skull and crossbones would probably be allowed). It should be human. It can be of any age.

Jolly good luck! Please keep this thread for entries - if you wish to comment on the challenge, or the concept of the challenge, please use this thread :

To start everyone off, here is a skull folded from ordinary kami paper. Pureland folding style - valley and mountain folds only.

You already broke your guidelines  .
-Please enter the name of the folder and the designer for each model.
That is a great skull! Please tell if you made it or if it was someone else's design. Either way great work.

Talking Skull by myself from a 10cm square of Japanese foil

While it might not be the best/nicest/most realistic skull created, it has a very nice biting action :-)

So long and keep folding ^_^

Skull Puzzle

Post by firstfold »

Here is my response to the challenge. I used my slip and stick procedures but as per rules of the challenge, I used only 4 inch squares:

Please note all pictures in this puzzle series.

This is a multilevel puzzle that can be used for young children and adults of many skill levels.

that's my very first try to create an own model, so please be gentle with your critics
(it is based on the kentoku mask of tomoko fuse and therefore not really new)

I had pretty much the same idea as Daydreamer from the start- except mine is a bit simpler.

Here's a picture (model folded and designed by me):

Told you it was simple!

Nothing too fancy, but I decided to pay homage to one of my all time favorite movies "The Nightmare Before Christmas" with an origami rendition of jack skellington. Not bad for midnight folding...

Seeing this thread automatically reminded me of Takashi Hojyo's "Skull 3" (or Gaikotsu-kun 3 *kanji*) from Origami Tanteidan 3rd Convention.

Skull by me based on Kunihiko Kasahara´s Panda face:

I like the blurred photo more (too much light when taking the photo):

It´s a real straight forward folding process and maybe if I find the time I will draw diagrams. For the next time I fold it, I will make the nose a little bit smaller and will see if the teeth can be made a bit more to my liking.
