Spam posts

Post by origami_8 »

Dear members,

please do not answer to spam posts. The spammer won't come back to read them and it is only making my administrator tasks harder since I then have to delete even more messages.
If you want those messages to be removed quicker, you can drop me a private message containing the name of the spammer. This way I know sooner that there is a spammer that I have to delete.
Otherwise just continue with the topic as if nothing happened, the spam post will vanish as soon as I've found it.

With the new updated Forum software you now have the possibility to directly report spam posts to moderators to take care of.

To do this you can simply click the new "Report post" icon which can be found on top of each post.

You can then also add some additional information and then click submit.

As soon as a moderator is around he/she can take care of your report.
So long and keep folding ^_^

Anna, maybe you can set the forum software up so that first time posters have to pass through moderation ? This seems to be quite efficient on the french forum...

Actually Saj has already set this for the new Forum. New members need to pass three posts before getting unmoderated status now.

This has now been done. We have also enabled a rather more stringent check on new user registrations which I can already see has reduced our SPAM registrations considerably. Combined with the new user alert warning system we should now be able to tackle SPAM quicker than ever before

In moderated status every post one makes needs to be approved by a Moderator before being visible for all the others. Theoretically we should be able to hide spam from you with having every new member in moderated status for the first three posts. Lets see if it works out. Have any of you spotted any Spam recently?

The three post moderated queue was only enabled after we discovered that the reCaptcha system had been compromised. We're keeping on top of SPAM members now :-)

I have never seen a single spam post before or after i joined. What do they say or look like? I wouldn't know one if i saw one. (A bit too affective, but sort of in a good way, although i am not necessarily a beliver in ignorance is bliss)
Oh there was a person posting really bad english on purpose, but that had been dealt with.

you'd know one if you saw one, they usually make no sense, are titled something having nothing to do with the forum (a popular one on here is 'looking for gift for a chinese exchange student"), and they usually have links to
a) viruses
b) porn
c) a porn virus

This one's not popular, but a bug in the database occurred during the attempt to delete it therefore it stays visible even though it has been deleted a long time ago.

I once found a spam post on another forum. I reported it. It was advertising 'Treasure Island Books'.
