Beginner wants to learn about paper.
Beginner wants to learn about paper.
Hello,
this is my first post. As the title says I am a beginner (but not a total beginner) and I want to learn 'bout (origami) paper. Where can I get information about paper? The first paper I bought was from KOMA:
http://www.origami-papier.eu/origamista ... -1369.html
I really like the colors but I've got the feeling that the paper doesn't really keep a shape.
What standard origami paper do you use?
Could you tell me what tant paper is? I haven't bought such paper yet - I only know that it is colored on both sides and thinker than the standard...
So many questions... ...Btw I bought some tissue foil paper:
http://www.origami-shop.com/en/packorig ... -1515.html
just because I like the look. I already know that it is tissue clued to foil... ...I will only use it for special occasions...
Best regards

I use "Abdeckpapier" for draft folding. its very cheap, but thin and strong. crappy for shaping but excellent for test folding. What standard origami paper do you use?
if I don't use Abdeckpapier, I fold with self made tissue foil.

Hello @ TheRealChris,
thank you for your answer. Is it hard to make foil paper? What equipment do I need? Is it expensive?
Best regards

Re: Beginner wants to learn about paper.
making tissue foil needs some practice but isn't too hard at all. and prices depend on the country in that you are living
Anna filmed me making tissue foil some years ago.. gosh the video is from 2005
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C4Z0efnmBhw
the glue is at least here in Germany really cheap... around 13€ for 5kg. that ammount longs for at last 5 kabillion sheets
there are only two things imporant for getting a good result
1. take a stiff and plain surface. I have a wooden board to work on it.
2. don't buy the cheapest tissue, it doesn't pay off. I always buy these
http://www.modulor.de/shop/oxid.php/sid ... /anid/DJAB
and that's it. look at the video and try out. it might cost less than 20 cents per 33cm sheet and maybe around 30 cents for a 45cm sheet.

Re: Beginner wants to learn about paper.
Hello Chris,
I'm from Germany too. I've seen the results and I'm impressed. I will do a rose made of copper tissue foil when it's finally arrived. Btw. are the results as good as bought paper? Haven't seen yellow and blue paper in the shops yet. But I think I won't do my own paper in the near future. In my next order at Miyabi I will buy some Tant paper just to try it:
http://www.origami-papier.eu/tant50colo ... -3349.html
Is Tant paper used for wet folding? Haven't tried to fold wet paper yet.
Btw. I found some "Abdeckpapier" at ebay but I don't need 300m.
Best regards

Re: Beginner wants to learn about paper.
Self made tissue foil and the tissue foil paper you can buy at origami-shop, are two completely different kinds of paper. The one from the shop is more like some handmade paper with a shiny side that seems to have a metal layer sprayed on. It doesn't at all feel like metal though.
Do you come to the OD-convention?

Hello origami_8,
thanks for your answer. As I wrote I'm new to origami. In which town is this convention and when will it be?

We wrote an article here that describes the basics on paper - e.g. what is tant paper, foil paper, etc. Hope this helps! http://blog.origamipapermonster.com/the ... ami-paper/
