Guessing paper thickness help.

Hi there I was wondering if there is someone who can help me out.

I usually use tissue foil for my models until I'm satisfied with them. After that I would like to make a 'final' version from some quality paper like elephanthide or canson, or something similiar. Only when I fold my model, the paper turns out too thick and I can throw away the unfinished/ripped model.

So my question is: Is there a way determine the maximum thickness of the paper needed to fold a certain model beforehand?

Experience I think. That and measuring the thickness of various papers so you have an idea. GSM is a good guide, but not reliable as some papers are denser than others at the same thickness. You can use calipers or a micrometer like this.

It needs to have .0001" resolution to be useful, and the micrometer will be more accurate. The vernier type is better IMO once you get used to reading it because you don't need batteries and it's usually cheaper:
