Paper for Roosevelt Elk by Robert Lang

I want to know what size and type of paper to use for Robert Lang's Roosevelt Elk. I used a normal piece of copy paper cut to a 21 cm square as a experiment. Unfortunately, that experiment failed because the paper was too thick for me to fold. Is there any suggestions for what size and type of paper I should use?
We all have gone very far from folding the crane.
