John Gerard Handmade Paper

Post by Baltorigamist »

I got about half a dozen sheets of John Gerard's handmade paper for Christmas (they're about 15" / 45cm square), and I was wondering if they needed to be treated with MC before folding. My gut tells me they can be folded dry, but I don't want to waste a six-dollar sheet of paper.
Secondly, the paper is a lot thicker than I anticipated, though it seems to be compressible.

Does anyone have experience with this paper who can suggest what I should (not) do with it?

I already used this paper, you don´t need to prepare it with MC. I folded the stag beetle https://www.flickr.com/photos/124930871 ... ed-public/
and the praying mantis https://www.flickr.com/photos/124930871 ... ed-public/ from it, and both worked perfectly fine. Since the papers are handmade, every sheet is different.

As Bodo already pointed out, the paperworks make many different kinds of paper which differ very much in thickness. Some are like very fine tissue while others feel like 80-100 gsm to my hand. Probably not the kind of model you plan to make (I suspect it will be animals), but here's a tessellation made from one of the medium-to-thin papers: https://www.flickr.com/photos/kosmulski ... ed-public/

Thanks for the feedback, guys.

Unfortunately, it seems all the sheets I got are very thick--probably in the range of 80-100gsm or more. :/ That's definitely too thick for what I was hoping to use them for.

Anyone know where this can be purchased now? Seems it's out of stock on Origami Shop.

I believe you can order directly from John—or, at least, that option was feasible several months ago when I emailed him. Shipping would be extremely expensive, however.
