Robert J. Lang - Crab - Origami Zoo

Post by Unforgettable »

Hi everyone,

I'm having problems with step 18. It says fold the triangular center flap and the layers behind it down as far as possible. However, I can't fold it down as far as the picture shows. The paper is locked behind from the closed wrap I performed in step 17. Cf. my pictures:

Did I do anything wrong in previous steps?

P.S.: I realize that I probably won't be able to finish the model this time with my 24x24cm kami but I want to figure out this step anyway.

Here is what I found worked although I have not folded it for a year or so.

Step-16
This should be easy I am sure you folded to hear correctly but hear is a picture anyway.

Step-17
This step is a bit tricky if you have never done it before.
fold the little triangle from the left to the right... Image
Image Then sink it into the model...
Repeat on the other side... Image...
It should look like this. Image
Inside should not have changed... Image
If you fold the flaps away It should look like this... Image

Step-18
It should look like this

Thanks a bunch for this photo help! And you used a precious paper on it, too!

My closed wrap had been done into the wrong layer of paper so of course it could not work. I feel like the diagrams should mention that or maybe I am just so unfamiliar with closed wraps apart from the ones I usually order at KFC.

Maybe my flimsy kami will see the end of this after all...

Retried folding the model because my 24x24cm kami tore horribly where the crab's face was going to be.

This time I used a 38x38cm sheet of baking paper. I had to give up again as far in as step 66 because even the thin baking paper had layered up so much that it became impossible to form the legs.

What size and paper would you recommand for a test fold?
Lang says "use a large square of tissue foil" but I don't want to waste good paper on a test fold. Also, my aluminium foil role is only 30cm long so I cannot make bigger foil than 30x30cm.

I asked Robert Lang once and he said that for a first fold 30*30 cm would work fine. But I didn't have any thing besides 15*15 cm so I folded it with that and it worked very well.

Is that foil from the origami shop?

I guess I just don't have the skills yet and really need to take tissue foil for that model...

Could you be so kind as to take a close up photo of the crab's face? I found that fold very difficult to execute.

Your fold looks pretty good, OrigamiGeek! The paper is iridescent paper, isn't it?

Yes it is iridescent paper paper
@Unforgettable: I actually have no Idea how to do the face. I just fold it and hope it looks good.

Thanks again for the help, your crab looks really nice.

I finished mine with the original kami paper - turns out it didn't matter that the paper was torn at the face. The face I did is all messed up but you are right, it does not affect the model that much. However, kami is much too thick and my sheet was way too small.

Overall, I do not like this model. I don't think it's an elegant fold and at times it seems overly complicated compared to the rather simple result.
