Help with Tubis boxes

Hi!

I've got the BOS booklet "Decorative boxes from single squares" by Arnold Tubis and Leon Brown. I don't understand what they mean by open and closed boxes, and are you supposed to fold the bottoms from a smaller piece of paper? (By calculating) And won't the bottoms be identical to the top so they'll be standing on the top patterns? I'd like to have the bottoms flat, but don't want to use the regular masu because of the flap problem as they say.
Can anyone clarify these issues to me?
Thanks in advance!

Since I don´t have the booklet, I can´t help you with this open or closed problem, but as far as I know, the paper size for the box is mostly a little bit larger than that of the lid on such boxes like these.
For the traditional masu, there is a way to fold it so that you don´t have this flap problem. Since we couldn´t find the instructions online, Gerwin and I have drawn diagrams how to do it. I always fold this box that way because it´s holding together a lot better and is also looking much better in my opinion. You can find the diagrams on our Origami Austria Homepage.
