Help With John Montroll's Blue Crab?

Post by natedugan54 »

Hi, there.
As stated, I need some help with John Montroll's Blue Crab.
The diagram for this can be found in the book "Origami Sea Life."
I am aware that there is a post requiring help on steps 27-29, which were what I originally was stuck on. I have got those folds down, to some extent, but then I ended up stuck on 30, and I assume I'm not in the clear until around 36, because those steps use the same folds I'm stuck on in step 30.
I would really appreciate some insight on this, as I would like to fold a really nice-looking crab.
Thanks,
Nate

P.S.
If you take the time out to post pictures/photo diagrams, I will make a little carved wooden idol in your honor, and pray to it each day.

*EDIT*
I decided it might be helpful to post a clip of the steps which I'm having trouble with.
These are steps 30-32.

(Probably not doing that right, but the link should work either way)

Here is what I've currently got. I apologize, I know it's very messy, but it's just another test run and I was kind of tired of being extremely precise knowing that it's just gonna tear.

Again, if you could post a picture, I would be extremely grateful.
Thanks,
Nate

To do step 30 right, make sure you did 27-29 right.

Step 30 is basically closed unsinks. Have you ever done Lang's Tarantula, opus 406 (The OI2 one)? It's similar to step 17 of the Tarantula.

Put your index finger inside the hole as indicated, grab the outside part of the hole with your thumb, and then VERY CAREFULLY slide out one layer of paper out with your index finger. Focus on pulling out paper first, you might want to balance out the pulling (left side halfway, then right side halfway, then left side again, right side again, make sure both side of the hole is raised with the same elevation). Then, make it neat, make sure that the paper you pulled out looks like half-fish base. Once it looks like it, you're done with the step.

Pretty hard to explain, but hope this helps.

Just to give credit where it is due, I am pretty sure that piece is by Robert Lang. - Marc

Thank you guys for the help! I haven't done anything complex like that Tarantula yet, and I figure that this might be a handy resource to use if I ever want to.

And yes, this model might be by Robert Lang. I'm really not sure, since the book was a compilation by the two and I always see the model as "Blue Crab by John Montroll".

Hi again. I don't think I have this done correctly, which might be the cause of my struggle in the first place. Here's what I currently have:

Again, something looks off from the diagram... Is this how it's supposed to look?
If it doesn't look right, I would greatly appreciate someone showing me where I'm making the mistake.
If it does look right, I would also appreciate someone marking points on the layers I'm supposed to pull out.
Also, an apology for the paper. Again, just a test. It's some kind of odd linen paper or something, from my dad's work.
Thanks,
Nate

Wow, did that get quoted a lot.
Anyways, thanks for the help! This is exactly what I was looking for. No need to be sorry for it being late; it's not like you're obliged to help.
Thank you for the help, and thanks to everyone else who helped me out.
