So I faked my way through this part for my test fold, but what is up with steps 51-52?

How is it possible to reach the configuration at step 52 by making the folds indicated in step 51? Is this just an error in the book?

You may be confused by the change in perspective. In 51 you are looking at the whole shell. In 52 you can only see half of the shell, as it has now become a 3D tent shape. The other half of the shell is hidden behind th art you are focusing on. In 53 you can now see the whole shell again. Notice the peak of the shell is defined by a highlight in the drawing. The part of the shell below the highlight is what you can see in step 52. The peak of the shell is formed by a gentle crease between the tips of the triangular folds made in 51.
