Yoshimasa's zebra

Hello:
I am working Yoshimasa's zebra in the 21st Origami Tanteidan Convention book, pages 94 to 103. I am stuck step 90, on page 100. What is the best easiest way to do this step? I tried first pulling the middle layer up and working my way through the layers downward. But, I am ripping the paper and not getting the result shown in step 91. I also tried folding the paper to look like step 91 and then pulling the layers upwards. Again, I end up ripping the paper at the point in the corner. Also, how much of the paper from each layer do I pullout?
Any help would be very much appreciated.
