Firstly--I realize you're new, but there's another topic on this model directly below this one in the respective forum. In the future, please use the search function.

87-89 are essentially what's called an Elias stretch. Sara Adams has a great tutorial on her site (Happyfolding) if you're not familiar with those.

Hmm, I thought I remembered seeing one.

I know this model uses a few of them.
All you're really doing for the mammoth, though, is spreading the pleats and creating a pleat at something of a perpendicular to the existing pleats. Steps 88-89 of the diagram are fairly clear about the crease lines, IMO.

First of, what diagrams are you working with? The ones from Works of Satoshi Kamiya or the ones from Tanteidan Magazine 85? That's an important information as they differ quite a lot.

Assuming you're not having trouble with the simple valley folds from the magazine I guess your problem is opening the front layer and squashing the corner. This is a folding manoeuvre that is split into several steps beginning at step 87 with the end result shown in step 90. It is not possible to see step 87 as a single step on it's own. Look forward to 88 and 89, they show in more detail what you are supposed to do. The result of step 87 is step 90.
