Satoshi Kamiya - Leafy Sea Dragon Shaping

Hello. I have a few difficulties with the shaping of the design. Is there any "right" way of shaping the leaves? I have folded the model multiple times yet I can never seem to get the shaping right. I also don't know how to get all the leaves to look the same (since some of the "branches" are structured differently from the rest). I can't find any tutorials anywhere. Someone once posted photo diagrams here on the forum, but they're long gone.
I have no trouble folding the base, it's just the shaping I have issues with.
Here are a couple of my attempts:
Another problem I have is with the 3 pairs of "branches" on the underside. In many photos they're clearly separated from one another even though they all originate from the same point (no rivers in between them). I don't know how to make them so separate, which makes the body look too short.
Any help is greatly appreciated.
