Shaping models from crease patterns...

I created this thread for two reasons. Number 1: I would like to introduce myself on the forum, being a new member to this forum. I will try to be an active member of the forum, having been browsing the forum for a few days before my registration... or maybe just a few *weeks*. Secondly, I can fold crease patterns partly, being able to precrease and collapse, but cannot shape models. Do I just fold and try and fold randomly, or to shape it as natural as possible? Please share your experiences with shaping, and how to shape, if that would be possible  . I look forward to using the forum a lot!! Also, I just received Origami Design Secrets, Second Edition, and saw in a few areas(Chapter 14, Polygon Packing) Robert Lang wrote
Contour map, base, and folded model of...
Spur-legged dung beetle and Cyclomatus Metalifer, does that mean no/minimal shaping required because it just showed a folded model and the Contour map?

Thank you,
OrigamiasaEnthusiast

This is a very interesting topic OrigamiEnthusiast. Welcome to the forum. I dont think I can help with your question. Sorry, I basically don't read crease patterns and I don't often fold models that need shaping .

I'm looking forward to other member's answers :D.

No, you definitely still have to shape. The thing is that shaping is hard to draw in diagrams, and even harder to represent in a crease pattern. For folders who are skilled enough to collapse a crease pattern like that one, they are probably skilled enough to shape it on their own. You can get a feel for shaping a base after a lot of experience of folding from videos and diagrams.

Okay, so is it just a thing that takes practice? Do I just shape how I want it to be with crimps, pleats, ect.?

The thing is my first model was Satoshi Kamiya's wizard, and I had no clue on how to shape. Now I understand that I should start with a simpler model...I'll try the dobsonfly that was posted.

This. Shaping a collapsed base comes with experience folding from diagrams. Over time, you can learn how various folds affect the appearance/shape of the model, and then you can essentially work backward to figure out how a designer achieved a certain look. It's something I need work on as well, to be honest, but Crease's statement above seems to be the general consensus.

Origamiasa, do you mean it was your first crease pattern or your first folded model? I ask because the Wizard is definitely a difficult crease pattern to shape if you don't have much experience.

Thank you. I meant this was my first crease pattern, I have some experience in diagrams and videos.

Any suggestions for models to fold from CP for a beginner to cps? Would Dobsonfly be good? I think I know how to shape the wings already just from a pic! :D

How do I delete this post? It won't let me, I don't see that button (the X button)

The dobsonfly would definitely be a decent start, though there might be better options out there. There's an entire thread on crease patterns stickied in this forum; I'll link it for you though.

Also, as I said in another thread, please watch the double-posting.

Question: What do you mean by double-posting?

Double-posting is when you post twice (or more) in succession. It's generally frowned upon in online forums.
If you need to add something to a post, you can hit the "edit" button in the upper right of the post.

Ok, The thing is I can't delete some of the previous posts with other peoples posts in the way.....

---Also, watch out for when I will post a summary regarding crease patterns and shaping, as soon as I find time to fold either Gilad's peacock or Chan's Dobsonfly

EDIT: I folded the Peacock a while ago and I am in the process of folding the Facehugger and Dobsonfly, just confused about the grids(Plus my 6" kami :D )

I found that it's not so much the model but what you are given ..being shown the base in a photo gives you the confidence to go your own way .Many diagrams will show shaping but for publication and realism they do tend to really be fussy about the results .with insects it should be easier to freestyle than with a humanoid subject.
If you can try to make an insect look at least good enough to prank someone like spider or bug .whereas for an exhibition perfection .
