A small circle placed over the vertex of two of more creases that indicates whether it is vertex point up or down. This idea is borrowed from Roberto Gretter, have a look at the top of page three in the diagram below:

(Its a little harder to fold with a square but it can be done)

Ah yes Ive seen that particular duck as the yellow/white paper in the corner will attest. It does seem to help a little though

What is more interesting is that the diagrams are from autumn 2004. The thread was from Nov 29, 2004 (around autumn isn't it).
I wonder if Roberto had this idea himself. I am going to try to contact him on the subject
