Circle packing questions

If anyone has designed a model using circle/river packing I have a few questions.

1. How did you get the circle packing? If you used a computer which program?

2. How did you get the reference marks(hopefully it isn't too complicated)?

3.What types of things would you reccomend to a beginner?

Thanks

ad 1) I played around with TreeMaker by Robert Lang a bit, which is a quite useful program, taking all the computational work of circle packing off you.
My Griever design was done partly using TreeMaker.

See also this topic about TreeMaker: viewtopic.php?t=599

ad 2) Another tool by Robert Lang helps you to find the reference points: ReferenceFinder
Even if TreeMaker gives you a base with all the necessary flaps, it almost never is optimal in regards to easiness of folding. So manually modifying the crease pattern to get easier reference points might be a good idea, but that's a process that can't really be described.

ad 3) You shouldn't go for the critters with 100 legs, antennae and other flaps at first. Fewer shorter flaps usually give you easier bases to collapse.

i started off by sketching with pencil, paper and a compass. i do use treemaker as a reference sometimes =) .i recommend starting to modify the traditional crane.(im working on it at the moment)
another approach is to use box packing, which is comparatively more easy than circle packing because all you need is a square grid.(Origamiwolf is an expert in this technique, she has created lots of complex models)
