are you trying the diagrams on brilliant origami? i suggest you to buy OFTC, it has better diags for his horse, and it shows how to cut a triangle of the square
BTW, here´s a challenge:I can do brill's horse with wings from a square, why don't yo try?

maybe, because pnpurdue just told us, that he couldn't fold the original horse?

I've never folded it, but the instructions say "start with an equilateral triangle". This means a triangle with all its sides of the same lenght and with inner angles of 60 °

If you do not know how to do an equilateral triangle, take a rectangle, fold the short side in half, unfold and then divide in three one of the 90° angles. you can do this by trial an error or using one of the methods described in:

So 2 of these 3 divisions will make 60°. Project that crease until it touches the crease from the first step and then from that point fold to the other raw corner and you will have your equilateral triangle
