It was Peter Farina who came up with the fire mage variation, plus some others:

Thank you Friet. I just tried to fold the wizard once again, and along with your diagrams I was able to get the fingers (my wizard looks like a penguin baby, but it is better than I had)

maybe it's not the question, what kind you should use, but more, which size?! don't start with a too small sheet of a too thick paper.

Normal weight paper isn't really good for this model, it'll be hard to keep the various parts of the model in place.
Try using large sheets of tissue foil (homemade and relatively cheap!) or a strong paper like unryu.

I used kraft paper for this. Still couldn't finish it. I think the size used was close to 30cm. I found that there were a few spots that would have been very useful to have even bigger sized paper as I tend of have large orge like hands.
but if you have small person hands you can probably do it with 30cms.

it has surely nothing to do with the size of your hands
ouch.

tools? I prefer to just use my hands. sometimes I will use a pin/pencil/tac whatever will fit into tiny folds that need to be opened up etc... but I really couldn't see myself folding with a special 'folding' tool. I like the satisfaction of just using my hands.
