McGG,

The ancient dragon is rather difficult. I agree with others who have suggested that you work your way up to folding it.

Complex models are not simply a matter of putting a larger number of folds in the paper. There is skill and technique necessary to make sharp points from center flaps, fold thick flaps without tearing the paper, make sinks or "unsinks" or wraps in difficult-to-manipulate locations, etc. The ancient dragon requires many of these skills and more.

You gain these skills by starting with the easier models and doing them well, then tackling something a bit more difficult until you can do that well, etc. Diving in on an ancient dragon without a bit more background is likely to be an extremely frustrating experience as well as a waste of paper.

I don't mean to discourage you from your goal of folding one. It's a good goal. But you should work your way up to it so you have some successes along the way that build up to being able to fold the dragon.

It depends on how fast he learns. I jumped from traditional models to Esseltine's Dragon in Flight, and then to Kamiya's ones, without being stuck in the process...

You can't say that he will not make it, see?
It's impossible until someone does it.

What's the smallest you could feasibly make this from the first time? I've got the book, but I've been putting off trying any past the Chocobo. I made that fine, so I'm not as rusty as I thought I guess. ^^

Anyway, yes. What would be a reasonable size to make this from?

3 inch square?

(The first time I did it was from a 6 inch square, from the crease pattern.)

I finally got a copy of the Works of Satoshi Kamiya, and I want to fold the Ancient Dragon. I have a quick question.

Should this middle flap be released during steps 53-56, or does it stay trapped?

I'm pretty sure it's trapped. There's no pleat in step 52, so the fold goes through the whole group of layers.

Thanks, I finished the dragon, and it came out pretty well. I'll see about taking pictures soon.
