no. generally speaking, closed and open sinks are not interchangeable unless the author otherwise specifies. that said, the open sink here doesn't need to be perfect as it is otherwise hidden, but it does need to be open. this is the hardest part of the model because it is difficult to spread the layers. if you have a long, thin object, like a chopstick or a pencil (or even your finger, if you used a large enough sheet), there should be a "hole" (that is otherwise the center of the model, where the eventual tail, neck, and wings are all joined) that you can enter through to spread the layers apart.

It is also a good idea to make the crease that you will sink both mountain and valley.

I'm currently at step 58 (very boring step imo), and I realized something :
This series of squash folds are a LOT easier if you precrease them. I'm surprised it's not mentioned in the diagram, that I have found very detailed so far.

Hi guys, I'm kinda new here but I make origami for like 4 years now. I'm doing my second ancient dragon and I'm having trouble with step 211.. I can't understand what to do.. I pulled the layer out and then where am I suppose to put it? valley fold it and put it behind the layer in its front? Please help me ! :\ Thanks!

The steps before 211 was to precrease the line for the step 211,and what you have to do is to sink that layer into the closest pocket(if there are no pockets to sink in,you can just valley fold and hide it inside the layers)
But actually,that part doesn't really disturbs the other steps so you can do whatever you want

I definitely agree. Ask anyone what model comes first to their mind, I doubt they'd say "Ancient dragon". Crane's probably the one.

Not that it's a definitive guide, but putting 'origami' into google images shows you a good amount of famous models.
Around 30% of the top models are golden venture.
RyuJinn 3.5 and Iron Man turn up before the ancient dragon.

umm not really.
The ancient dragon does have similar structures inside it that could be simplified into a crane, but the base is nothing like the bird base.
I doubt the tree diagram for the ancient dragon have much in common that of the crane.

but still it's a great model.

I think the ancient dragon is more popular with origamists, rather than the average non-folder.
