Uggh, spent a long time trying to collapse the eyes of the mask, some of the folds just would not work correctly! Then the paper gave out and began ripping. sigh. I think it took me longer trying to fold half the model than it took Andrew to reverse-engineer the model. I wish someday I will be as good as you! Well, time for a second try. Wish meh luck

Good luck (I'm a begginner at cps so i'm wincing at the thought of:
A: attempting
B: getting so far and failing)
It is hard though. Having it in such a complex shape.

Sorry for not posting much lately, we recently started school again, so things have been kinda iffy.
Ill probably be able to post more soon though, but not as complex as the masks themsleves yet.

The real challenge with Joel's work is that he is a sculptor - the technical aspects of folding the masks, while daunting, are not insurmountable. However the sculpting and shaping he does is really a thing that is Joel's own doing, and very unique to him. In a way, much like Joisel.

I have watched Joel fold many times, and while I understand some of what he's doing, it's still astounding to watch- he has such a knowledge of his techniques and folds that it seems to happen by magic.

I think these kinds of folding methods and techniques rather defy easy explanation and are best left to personal discovery and experimentation. A CP or some such is a poor substitute to the years of development that Joel has put into his work.

I know what you mean by magic! he uses flat shapes to create 3D materpieces!

I wasn't implying you shouldn't try it - the way we learn is by trying! by all means give it a go.

My point was more that Joel has a lot of time tied up in his mask folding, and it would be impossible to duplicate that right away. I would even go so far as to stipulate that if you spend enough time folding these, you will develop your *own* techniques, which will become your own style at that point. That's what I see with other origamists who have invested the time in their own designs and work over the years.

Don't get discouraged! I could only reverse-engineer that thing after folding mostly tessellations for a couple years, keep trying and you'll make it

Joel's mask are incredibly hard, but the reward you get from successfully folding one are also incredibly joyful!

anyways just like ahudson, I am on my way to reverse engineer one of Joels mask, don't know when I will finish it though (or if I am able too), super busy right now. I will post a pic soon on my progess!

Wow this is an incredibly interesting thread! I love Joel's masks and had only ever dreamed of being able to make one but after seeing this, I might have to give it a go!

I've not done a huge amount of tessellations before but they fascinate me, I'm quite encouraged that Eric Gjerde is a part of this forum! I know where I'll be sending all my long boring tessellation questions from now on
