Hi!

Does anyone know the folding pattern / model name of this shape? Does it involve any cuts to the paper?

It doesn't require any cutting--in fact, it's an intermediate step in something called a square twist. All you need to do is make a Preliminary Fold and spread the layers out while twisting the center point.

It seems like the model in the picture is some kind of module that can be connected to other such modules. I'm not familiar with the specific module, but I have come up with a rose that uses a similar twist some years ago: http://www.origami.at/diagrams/flower.pdf

The art installation consists of several modules that have two by five molecules linked together on one sheet with four molecules per side overlapping to lock the modules together.

In this, 4 cranes were replaced by a twisted shape - is this the same square twist that you explained to me, but with some parts of the paper cut away (the squares which origami_8 marked yellow in her description)? Then again, the arms seem to be triangular and not square shaped as in origami_8's instruction...

Does anyone of you understand how the twisted shape in the Renzuru was achieved?

Well, now this time cutting was involved.
There are two types of cuts, firstly the ones to separate the individual molecules (basically along the orange lines in my Crease pattern), just like in the Hiden Senbazuzu Orikata: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Cate ... ru_Orikata
The second type of cuts is only made on the second picture to the swirl units, to make them skinnier.
On the first picture it looks as if the swirls are just twisted waterbomb bases. On the second those bases have cuts along the middle lines of each base to fold the side flaps inwards.
