Trying to buy copy of out-of-print book

Post by cleverLCS »

(Note: I am not interested in pirating this book. I would rather purchase it through legal channels.)

When I was a kid, I remember the school library having a book called "World of Origami." It was easily 2-300 pages long, and had multi-square models, and even models from regular hexagons and equilateral triangles. The book was definitely older than me, probably from the 50s or 60s. I specifically remember it having several different breeds of dog, each made from 2 crane bases. I also remember it having a crab that actually had 8 legs, instead of the usual from-a-square crab which has 2.

I know it's impossible to find such an old book new, since origami books tend not to be reprinted as often as other reference books, but the used-book market isn't really helping me much either.

The only book I'm finding with that title from that time period is by Isao Honda and is much smaller (only about 150 pages). From what I can tell via the contents page (which is usually free to sample, as it doesn't contain the patterns themselves), it doesn't have most of the special models I remember. I want to buy a copy specifically because of those special models, and while I know it's been a good quarter-century since I last saw the book, what I'm finding just doesn't seem to match what I'm looking for.

Does anybody have any leads I might use to find this book? I am even willing to get a Japanese copy from Japan, as the directions for origami usually rely more on visuals than on words.

It doesn't ring a bell. I suggest you ask in the Origami Mailing List. There's a good number of older origamists that participate in that list. One of them might know the book you're talking about.

Are you sure it really isn't Honda's book?
According to Giladorigami database, Honda's The World of Origami has 264 pages (not 150ish), a crab with many legs, a two-sheets dashchund, and many models starting with hexagons, triangles, circles, diamonds, rectangles...

Otherwise, I don't know if there is a branch of Origami USA in Florida, but it might be a good place to start an inquiry?

Origami USA has a lending library that lists the book, so you could lend it there to make sure it is the one you want before continuing your search to buy it: https://origamiusa.org/lending-library

Apparently it is! My last search for the book turned up only an abridged version, but that was on Google. Thank you!

ETA: It's on eBay! I got a used copy pretty cheaply. It'll be good to have back the "old friend" that I used to read during study hall.
