Pocket Tissue Holder

Post by monmon »

I am looking to create a cigarette packet like shape, only with no moving parts and an open top, in order to facilitate pocket tissues.

I first checked online, as a box shape would be such a common in the origami world, but found that mostly equilaterals, which were hard to modify, but I did have some success:

The first half of this I managed to modify to this:

Then I found the following: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=caDwbe02l6g

Of which I was able to shrink the size to, but not get the length:

I need something that will cover the entire length of the pocket tissues (10.5cm x 5.5cm x 2.5cm), with just a little room for pinching at the top (to remove a tissue) and of course an open top.

Inching closer (from this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=unWU6DIEZzk), I was able to take inspiration from this gift bag tutorial to get the base for the tissues, and with enough paper (from a British A4 sheet) to reach the top:

However, securing those flaps (externally, so as to not have the insertion/removal of tissues interfere) is my weakness, I am unsure how to best make them come together.

Any ideas ?..

Well, I do have an idea, based on this traditional box: http://www.origami.at/diagrams/simple_box.pdf using a 25.5 x 25.5 cm square for a box that is 10 cm high, 5.5 cm wide and 2 cm deep and exactly fits the pocket tissues that are commonly sold in my area. There are a few adjustments that have to be done to make it work, but the final box is quite stable. My main problem is that the final step of closing the top is quite fiddly and has to be done carefully as not to rip the paper. https://photos.app.goo.gl/4xANHCmQGGmvQWPd9

Hi Anna, I am afraid that both of your designs defeated me, as I was unable emulate them, do you have a more detailed guide please ?

So, I rotated the paper and now it is way easier to close the top. I think the paper used could be a little bigger like 27x27 cm but for now I only tried with 25x25 cm as this is what I had at hand. The design is far from perfect but works as intended. Here is a short photo guide https://photos.app.goo.gl/CXuZFe7HNLXU5v11A

This may do: it does have a lid but you can exclude it: https://vallebird.files.wordpress.com/2 ... ng-box.pdf

Hello Anna and thank you very much for taking the time to illustrate the folds.

Using British A4 paper my measurements were slightly less so than your own, but I made a good go of it and can confirm that I got favourable results:

Your design, whilst paper thin on the base, reinforced the edges where contact will mostly occur, as they will be destined for the inner breast, or outer flap, pocket of a suit, depending on convenience.

Many thanks for your help with this project.

Mr Brill: Many thanks for the reference, but without a base, and fashioned from a single piece of A4 paper, I decided against the design.
