I don´t really understand, why you want to make a modular construct of a subject that has been solved with very nice single piece versions before. My favorite model that works after this principle is David Derudas´ Gabbiano:

Ok, let me explain. We (firstfold & myself) are both developing new systems, and this results from trying new things with what you've got already. The basic idea is this: "Hmm, that looks cool. Can I make one from my ideas?" and voila, new techniques emerge. The basic new technique I will be developing to make the bird is to take a triagular structure and stick it on a spherical surface. This won't be round, because spherical folding is still in its early years, but I think you get the idea.

Next item to consider for Challenge

Post by firstfold »

I had been planning to make a "Hobby Horse Pull toy".for some time I looked up "Pull toy" on the web and found some amazing things. Many were made of wood, plastic or metal. Many had unique, yet simple mechanical action. I think this could be a grand source of ideas. Therefore, my next proposal to add to the list for our challenge is to make an origami pull toy.

Here´s a challenge for you two or anyone else who likes to try. I would like to see a folded doll´s house (front open) with three etages a staircase on one side and a working elevator on the other side.
The roof should contain a chimney. Windows and a door in the wall would be nice too and best of all would be a balcony

Spiral Staircase ?

Post by firstfold »

Actually - I've been considering either an elevator or an escalator. I even had overly grandized dreams of adding opening elevator doors.

I supose you want a spiral staircase?

The three floor doll house (with walls) is within my capabilities - the rest - well, we will have to wait and see.

Yes, I think a pull-toy could be interresting, and even the doll's house (although I think the doll's house might be a bit too intensive, not really a challenge) Thus the pull toy is in, and I leave the doll's house decision up to you, firstfold.

Okay, I'm gonna have to think about a next one, I'm all out at the moment. :D

Hah! I got an idea while standing in the line at KFC. How about a working umbrella, not neccesarily life size, but it must open, close and lock into the open possition like a real one.

Construction Vehicle

Post by firstfold »

For my next proposal for out challenge I would like to suggest a construction vehicle like a crane, bulldozer, et. al.

By my count this is the eigth item (4 each). We should each suggest one more item and I will first summarize what we have proposed and then constuct a poll.

Would you like to include items proposed by others?

We need to give the poll some time for people to have people respond.

Sorry for the long wait, I kinda forgot about all things non-academic over the last couple of weeks. We're discussing all sorts of pre thirteenth century technologies in my applied math class, which gave me the idea for my next proposal. How about a siege weapon of some sort? Perhaps a Trebuchet. I think it would be quite cool.

And yes, the plan you've outlined in your previous post sounds fine. By me count the extra models (proposed by our esteamed collegues) are: The Sydney Opera house and a dolls house. These can actually be reduced to just the doll house if we take the operahouse as a strong proposal in the building catagory. But in any case, I think we can include them. Perhaps just state that they were external proposals.

Don't Forget -

You need to propose one more category before I can put together the poll.

This process has been fun for me but then I am retired.
In the mean time, check out my "Slip and Stick" kites on my web site.
Thanks for your interest and participation!!

I did propose another category, siege weaponry, specifically a Trebuchet.

Your turn. :)

I'm sorry, I read your previous reply too fast. Tierd old eyes missed the line with your proposal.

Are you sure you want that category? I already have a catapult - just add a sling and wheels and I'm there. I think I might have a head start on this one!

Final Proposal

Post by firstfold »

OK - I guess I have stalled enough ! I wa trying to think up something really great. So here it is:

An Optical Illusion
If you have ever seen Salvidor Dali's painting of Lincoln, this is what inspired me. It's what you see when you take off your glasses that is amazing - especially with 20 /400 vision.

Another source of inspiration for this challenge was from Escher where the stairs seem to go ion two directions at the same time.

I want to give you one last chance to change your mind about using a Trebuchet as a challenge. I just saw what the guys from Myth Busters did with a paper crossbow. I don't think I can compete with that !

I've seen one of these:

Made out of blocks of wood. You're probably thinking that its impossible, but all you need is the right camera angle
