Word Association Game - Origami Version

Post by gilad_zn »

A while back in the Israeli Origami Forum, Miri Golan challanged us to give verbal folding instruction for a simple model in the forum an see if anyone managed to fold that model. After some time, I remembered something like the word association game (Jason posted it in the kitchen sink) that we used to play in my family during long car drives. Instead of just words, each one would tell a sentance for a story, and the next person had to pick it up where he left. We got some funny stories made this way.

So my idea was this: a person gives a verbal instruction for an origami move, and another person picks it up. It's kind of a community doodeling & designing. I think it might give interesting results, but alas, other than myself only two other people tried it, and after about six replies it just died out.

And in case any one person decides he wants to take the model in a certain direction, he musn't tell it to anyone else. And to make sure he won't interfere too much, one can't suggest more than one move in a row.

So, here we go...

1) White side up. Fold the paper in half horizontally and unfold.
Cheers!

Interesting....... but I call for a move to make more than one precrease be a move next time :)

2) Fold in half vertically and unfold.

(Clairification for steps 6 and 7, I figure that since the diagonals are already creased that you mean fold in half horizontally and vertically.

I would also ask the thread if the one step per person rule may be revised to steps that require folding. Thus, "Turn over" would not count as one's move)

(assuming orientation is of a diamond with a point toward you)

8) Valley fold a kite fold bringing the bottom two 45 degree edges to the center of the paper, while allowing the two corners of the paper to come out.

(whewww, I was afraid we'd go to the all too familiar blinzed frog base)

9) Repeat step 8 on the opposite corner. You will have to fold two squash folds in the center. This looks a bit like a petal fold.
Cheers!

This is assuming that all four corners are out from underneath now.
10) Mountain fold the model in half vertically.

P.S. What about using ASCII art?

Please, someone clairify step 10, whether the mountian fold in half creases along which line of axis.... ( or someone assume one way and proceed)

the point is that you don't know, kind of like the game telephone. Someone whispers something and the person passes it on. Usually the resulting phrase is nothing like what the person intended.

Ahhh, but that is one of the points of this thread. Most people never really think about verbal instructions, all they know is diagrams. There are written instructions for Fred Rohm's Shield of David on the OUSA site, just for these purposes. That's why I don't think we should use ASCII art (or is it UTF-8 now a days?), but rather try to write clear instructions.

Folding in half can be interperted in several ways. That's why DZIGGITAI wrote
This is assuming that all four corners are out from underneath now.
I don't really understand what "underneath" means here.
I think it would be simpler to say if you fold in half along the long or short lines, or to first orient the model using the middle flaps (perpendicular or horizontal to the folder), and the add the folding instruction.
Cheers!

I was just curious if ASCII origami has been done before, not to be done here.
