If they are just too dark, try adjusting the gamma correction. In IrfanView you can find it in the adjust colours settings.
Better lighting would of course be ideal.

I just came across this video how to make your own photo-box and thought I'd share it with you:

Thanks origami_8 :D!

Óscar Osorio had also taught how to make a light box in 4 Esquinas magazine, although it's all in Spanish: http://revista4esquinas.blogspot.com.co ... s-no8.html

I recently built a small photo setup that is simple for lazy people like me. I took a cardboard box and removed the top and front, then cut out large holes on the sides and replaced it with tracing paper. I curved a piece of printer paper on the back wall, and I was done in less than 20 minutes. I placed the box on my kitchen counter under an tungsten lightbulb, adjusted my camera, and didn't bother to use any other lights.

It works well considering how little effort I put into it but is flimsy and too small for anything larger than an apple.

What is the cutting of the sides and the replacement with tracing paper for?

I don't think I really needed it but if I were to use extra lights it helps make it not as bright. If I had just cut out the holes and didn't use the tracing paper it would create glare and make the model shiny.
